The Heart of England/Peak District
The Peak District is famous for its walking and stunning scenery as well as the Spa Town of Buxton and the market town of Bakewell. It is also home to some of the worlds best rock climbing and some pretty amazing biking be it on or off road! With countless local food producers and some amazing restaurants you certainly wont be going hungry! Just to the south is the relatively unknown Staffordshire Moorlands and the wooded hills around Alton, well worth an explore.
Ford is a peaceful hamlet off the beaten track set on the banks of the river Hants. The cottage is about half a mile out of the village along a dead end road, it is secluded by trees from the main house and so if you are looking for seclusion, this is the place. It is a few miles to the nearest pub in Onecote and about three miles to the nearest shop. With some lovely walking from the front door you won't need to go far, Dovedale and the spectacular Roaches are just a few mins away by car. A good choice of pubs and restaurants are all close by.

"Overpriced and uncaring owners"
This property is too small for 6 people. In order to accommodate this number the available room for comfortable eating and storage has been compromised by using the space on the ground floor as a bed… More
Firstly can we explain the circumstances of this booking. We exchange weeks in our cottage for credits, which we can then use in other holiday properties. This couple had come to us via the holiday exchange company, with the exception of a token £35 towards heating it was a free weeks holiday. £35 for up to six people for seven nights is not overpriced?
So to deal with their points. We really struggle to see how a couple can claim to be cramped in a six person cottage. The majority of our bookings are family's and groups of six, with many return customers. We have never had any issues about space before. I know it's unheard of to have a stainless steel pedal bin in a kitchen but is this man seriously suggesting that we convert a comfortable en-suite double bedroom, which is popular with our more senior and less agile guests into a broom cupboard!
We had major renovation work in the cottage the five days before their arrival. The oil boiler had been removed from the kitchen, ceiling patched up, floor tiles re-grouted, hot water system totally replaced upstairs, pipes boxed in, dishwasher installed and kitchen worktop above it extended. The cottage was in a complete mess, but we worked our socks off to get it back up to our high standard. It is very regrettable that the cooker got over looked, but under the circumstances an understandable human error. I could understand being unhappy if the cottage was generally dirty all over, but the cooker seemed to be a real problem. Unfortunately by the time he bought up the matter of the cooker he had wound us up so much that we didn't feel inclined to rush in and rectify it like we would normally do. As for the pans, their is nothing wrong with them. The table is pine and has a coating of Bee's wax on it.
Wine. They booked through the Holiday Exchange company. No mention of wine is made on its website. But he seems to think that as he was paying £0 he is entitled to everything full paying guest who book through our website get. He did get unlimited electricity, hot water, heating, logs for the fire (which they weren't shy in using) and milk, chocolates and eggs. When he asked about the wine we explained we didn't include it on these exchange weeks, thinking he would understand. He explained to us pompously that they treat all their guests the same. This is interesting as it turns out their guests get nothing and would also have to pay for most utilities as an extra except at certain times of the year when some are included. Except if you are an exchange guest, you pay for every single unit. Interesting interpretation of treating everyone the same?
The fire. Prior to their arrival, she telephoned us and asked lots of questions. She asked if the fire could be lit for their arrival. We explained it wasn't something we did for any of our guests. We went on to say that as we have six and eight year old children that we collect from school and go onto swimming club, it just isn't possible. Not content with this response he then sent an email asking for the fire to be lit, to which we repeated our response. Even if we did light the fire for guests, we don't understand how we could have, as we were out collecting our children at the point of their arrival? The heating was on at 24 degrees and the cottage was very warm, so we really can't understand why this is such an issue?
Just to give you an idea as to the sort of petty spitefully people we are talking about here, we were shocked, but not surprised to find a very unpleasant comment in our visitors book. The first in six years. But no! That's not all, not content with leaving their list of factually incorrect complaints and unpleasantness they then numbered every page by hand so as to make it obvious if we remove it.
We are not writing this response to these people, we don't want to waste our breath. The exchange company spoke with them, we were told he was pompous, rude and spoke all over her. But we do hope that you will understand that this is clearly not a correct review of our property. Our other reviews are proof of that.
