The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Vendee region
There are a wealth of attractions in Vendee to suit the whole family. Even when the sun doesn't shine, there is always something to keep everyone entertained! The Vendée also beckons tourists inland with its Marais Poitevin. A chief attraction in its own right, Marais Poitevin is an area of marshlands that is famous for its wildlife.
Other chief attractions in Vendée include the forested area around the village of Mervent, the undulating countryside of Bocage, and the historical theme park found at the Puy du Fou. Aside from the miles of sandy beaches that are bounded by dunes and pine woods plus the mild climate that make Vendée a popular favourite destination among tourists, the Vendée also features plenty of churches, abbeys, and museums to visit.
Fontenay le Comte / Foussais Payre area
It was in this "town of art and history", baptized "Fountain Springing with Fine Minds" by François I, that Rabelais embraced Humanism. In the footsteps of the creator of Pantagruel, discover rich mansions, shaded gardens and elegant squares, witnesses to a prestigious past, preserved within this unique Vendée conservation area (86 hectares incorporating 1700 buildings).
Take the walking tour " mille ans d'histoire" (A Thousand Years of History) and discover the beautiful Place Belliard with its fine houses and arcades, Notre Dame church with its panoramic view from the top of its bell tower, the Rue des Loges with its half-timbered houses, the Vendée Museum and also the Seneschal's Court opposite the Fountain of the 4 Tias, emblem of the city. In this "Old Fontenay" entirely restored and enhanced by architectural lighting, the road system is similar to that of mediaeval times, the street names evoking the guilds and corporations who were active there : the drapers, the tanners, the silversmiths…
The numerous festivals (Les Richochets, street arts during the summer), events (the time-honoured Biennial, whose parade of flower-decorated floats was witnessed by thousands at Whitsun 2003), spectacles, concerts, exhibitions (events combining contemporary and classic art in the historic centre from July to September) and other events throughout the year ensuring an intense and varied cultural life.
A member of the "The Most Beautiful Places to visit in France" Association, National "Art of Living" prizewinner, economic and administrative capital of South Vendée and also "Most Sportive" and most "Most Handicapped Sportive" town in France, Fontenay is one of the most beautiful and pleasant centres in Poitou.
At the edge of the forest, in the heart of the picturesque bocage (semi-wooded country), lies the small Renaissance town of FOUSSAIS PAYRE whose church is an undisputed treasure.
The sculptures of the archway, representing both biblical characters and scenes from everyday life, is quite remarkable. Opposite, the house of François LAURENT dating from 1552, adds further to the town's character. The beautifully restored 15th century priory adjoining the church today houses the offices of the Mairie. This group, restored in 1980 as part of "Operation Village", bears witness to the village's past wealth, known during the Renaissance for its spinning, weaving and tanning industries.
All around, the green countryside is dotted with many beautiful houses, and it is this mixture of rich heritage and environmental conservation which has allowed Foussais-Payré to form part of the circle known as "Little Towns of Character". Since 1997, classical concerts have been given in the Norman church under the banner of "Musical Evenings in Norman Vendée.
