Farmhouse | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 6
The south-east facing Gite offers on its ground floor a farmhouse style kitchen with cooker, microwave, kettle, and toaster, chefs' knives, cutlery and crockery.
The dining room has a long table, six chairs, two upholstered armchairs, woodstove, armoire for glasses\crockery and bookshelves stocked with many current novels and reference books written in both English and French.
The large salon has a comfortable three piece sofa-bed suite, large comfortable sofa, coffee table, desk and chair and wide screen TV with English Freesat channels and their French equivalent.
The three downstairs rooms have white tiled floors and original beamed ceilings.
Upstairs are two double bedrooms (with wardrobes, chests of drawers, bedside cupboards) and a Breton-style single “armoire” bedroom; one of the rooms has a large double and a single bed. The bathroom has a shower, wash-basin, WC, and there is also a separate WC room.
Outside is an 80sq metre white tiled terrace including a covered dining area, over which well established climbers (vine, wisteria and jasmine) are growing, with a large round slate table and 6 chairs sheltered underneath for al fresco dining. This terrace overlooks the 10mx5m heated swimming pool, which has its own wooden terrace equipped with teak sun loungers, teak table and chairs. The pool area overlooks the lawn and orchard.

Surrounding the property are fields of sunflowers, wheat, corn, dairy meadows, orchards, vineyards, with the river Autize only a couple of fields away; within 3 kms of a sandy lakeside beach and the vast, wild acres of the Mervent forest. La Rochelle and the Vendee coast are a 50 km drive across the Marais Poitevin, an area once covered by the sea, one of the richest natural habitats in France.
During High season bookings are in weekly blocks, Saturday to Saturday. Shorter bookings are possible during the rest of the year.
A non-refundable deposit of £250 is payable upon booking with the remainder to be paid two months before arrival here, together with a £100 per booking security deposit refundable if there's no damage to the property and it's left in a clean and tidy condition.
Our location is 10kms from Fontenay Le Comte, which is a sizeable town with more than five supermarkets and a major market every Saturday morning. The river Vendee passes through the centre of the town offering delightful walks along its course. For children Fontenay has an indoor swimming pool, treetop climbing centre, BMX track, Go-kart racing, horse riding, tennis courts....).
The gite is 3kms from Nieuill sur L'Autize which has a small supermarket, bank, chemist, boulangerie, butcher, bar and Abbey. Only 3kms the opposite direction is St Hilaire des Loges which has much the same amenities, whilst 7kms beyond is Coulonge which is larger than the previous two towns and has a significant market every Tuesday morning.
Below our grounds is a sentier, a designated cycling\walking 3metre wide roadway which leads through deep countryside of outstanding natural beauty (it does occasionally involve going along the highway briefly); in one direction it goes 90km to Reamur and 17km to Maillezais. There are other nearby sentiers to travel along as well.
The Plain which is just behind the Gite offers many kilometres of scarcely used lanes through cereal crops.
The lake at nearby Chassenon (3km away), actually a massive bend in the river Vendee, has a sandy beach (owned/maintained to the highest standard by the Vendee Government to whom there is payable a small daily fee), with tall-tree-shaded picnic tables, bar/cafe, life-guarded swimming, and where boats and family pedaloes can be hired.
The river skirts the Mervent Forest which is terrific for cycling with designated, well marked graded trails. Where the Vendee passes through the Mervent township area, the riverside has picturesque restaurant bars, offering boats for hire, beaches and swimming.
Slightly further afield there's the world acclaimed Futurescope in Poitiers only an hour's drive away; La Rochelle, boasting its Old Port, super chic shopping, beaches and Aquarium, with the Ile de Ré also just a short drive over a visually stunning bridge. To get there requires a 45 min drive across the Marais Poitevin which has hundreds of waterways with many places available to rent boats.
There's also the Gite's pool (heated from June to Mid-September) and lots of sunshine too.
The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region
The farmhouse is situated in micro climate of the southern Vendee, the second sunniest region of France, on the borders of Deux Sevres and Charente Maritime, thus encompassing areas of great diversity such as the Marais Poitevin with 600kms of canals and rivers (boats can be hired in Venise Vert to explore their beauty), the prairie growing all types of cereal crops is criss-crossed with hundreds of kms of empty roads to wander along, and the hilly region known as the Bocage which includes the Mervent Forest with countless trails to hike or bike.
A sentier (a 3mtr wide tarmac roadway) passes in the valley below the house and whose usage is restricted to pedestrians and bicycles, which can be joined from the bottom of the grounds and leads north, 91 kms to Reamur, and 17kms south to the Abbaye of Maillezais.
Under a 40 min drive is the Atlantic coastline with many miles of beautiful sandy beaches, islands, and famous port cities such as La Rochelle and Les Sables de l'Olonne from where the Vendee Globe yacht race starts.
Fontenay le Comte
The area is rich in buildings of historic and architectural interest with some of Europe's most imposing Romanesque churches, abbeys, and chateaux. Within 3 to 20 kms are three villages nationally classified as some of the most beautiful in France (Nieul sur l'Autize, Foussais Parais, and Vouvent).
For sports lovers: Golfers, the region has courses offering interesting terrains and challenges. The coast, lakes and rivers are excellent for fishermen; daily and weekly permits are available from the local tourist office. Tennis courts are 3 kms away in St Hilaire des Loges, with squash, horse riding, forest-top climbing available in Mervent and Fontenay le Comte, where you can also do BMXing and Go-Cart driving, you could even try a Montgolfier flight.

"Look no further you have found the perfect gite in the perfect location"
Well what can I say, this gite exceeded all my expectations and I can honestly tell you that I will be back next year. The owners will give you the warmest welcome and not only will you fall in love with the house but you'll fall in love with them too! My two girls aged 10 and 11 loved the swimming pool and the extensive gardens which lead to a path right down to the river. There is lots to do canoeing/walking/cycling/shopping something to suit anyone from families to pensioners. The house and the pool are immaculately clean with everything that you would possibly need and more. Geraldine & Steven have decorated and refurbished this house to the highest possible standard and their taste in decor is to be envied. The only problem with it is that you will not want to leave!!!!!!!!!
