The Midi-Pyrenees / Ariege region
In the South West of France, the Midi-Pyrenees, has eight departments each with its own strong character. Magnificent mountain scenery can be found both to the north and south of the region. The weather in the Pyrenees is very warm in summer, dry and sunny until late october, cold and snowy in the winter. In spring, days are sunny with mild temperatures. In the winter, the ski resorts of the Pyrenees are less than 45 minutes away from the farmhouse. Then the wide sandy beaches of the Atlantic or the Mediterranean beaches are less than a couple of hours drive or train ride. The main city is Toulouse, one of the finest and most attractive city in France, with its many superb shops, museums and restaurants to explore.
Foix area
Ariege is fantastic for nature lovers, hikers, walkers ans so on.. We will be able to do numerous outdoor activities like horse riding, canoeing, quad biking, etc..., simply relaxing by the pool or visit our beautiful region.
10 minutes away from us , you can stop at the medieval hilltop village of Carla-bayle for a sweeping view of the countryside. The birthplace of the protestant philosopher Pierre Bayle, it is also home to many artists and craftspeople.
LE MAS D'AZIL is one of the most famous prehistoric caves in the world. Discoveries there led to identification of the Azilian era.
LE SERONAIS is a lovely area of green, rolling foothills and woodlands midway beetween St Girons and Foix. Golf course, Centre national des chevaux de Merens, Reptile museum, fishing and cycling.
FOIX is the departmental capital of Ariege and is dominated by the Foix Castle, once the home of Count Gaston Phoebus, one of the great barons of 14th century France. It is the one intact castle remaining in Ariege. Also near Foix, is the subterranean river of Labouichie, the longest navigable underground river in Europe open to the public.
MIREPOIX is a mediaval bastide town, its encircling walls pierced by several arched entryways and its streets of half-timbered houses converging on a large central square. The surrounding countryside is the heart of the cathar Ariege.
Near Tarascon, the caves of Niaux , Bedeilhac, Lombrives and La Vache are the favourite destinations of those interested in the Prehistory.
