The Tuscany region
Tuscany is one of the most important Italian regions for the historical, artistic, economic, cultural and landscape. The history of Tuscany covers a long period of time, ranging from prehistory to the present day, making it crucial since the Middle Ages to the birth of the Italian language. Only Florence, the Cradle of the Renaissance, attracts around 6 milion visitors a year. The Uffizi Gallery Italy's most visited museum some 1,5 milion a year. Lucca is a prosperous town entirely enclosed within superb Renaissance walls with a rich heritage of churches and places. Siena one of the loveliest town in Italy, with great museums, interesting shops and many hills. Siena is home to the famous Palio, a horse race held in Piazza del Campo on 2 July and 16 August.
Tuscany-Chianti Area Fernand Braudel, one of the greatest historians of the century, had no doubts:“Chianti is the most moving countryside in existence.” An area of gently rolling hills that spreads out between Florence and Siena, Chianti is a garden of woods, vineyards, farmhouses with shingles faded by the sun, stone walls, Romanesque churches, fortified villages and castles encircled by imposing walls. From Greve to Gaiole, Castellina to Castelnuovo Berardenga, Volpaia to Badia di Coltibuono up to the walls of Monteriggioni, and the gates of Siena, Chianti is a breathtaking spectacle. A perfect symbiosis between man and nature. The roads wind slowly and sedately along itineraries marked by vineyards and cypress trees, olive-groves and oak woods: there is no reason to hurry in Chianti. Here in the country of wine and olive-oil, Chianti Classico is at home in Greve in the month of September, during grape-harvest. Taste and smell are taken very seriously in Chianti where cooking is a joyous art, but serious and rich. And so are the country traditions: in June, in Castelnuovo Berardenga, a sumptuous historic reconstruction evokes the centuries-old military rivalry between Florence and Siena for domination of the Chianti hills.
Tuscany-Siena Area The Campo, the most beautiful square in the world, Siena’s Piazza del Campo, lies like an open shell in the heart of the city. Built during the fourteenth century, it was able to accommodate the entire population of Siena, and was frequently the site of fairs, festivals and performances in general, as well as bull and buffalo fights. Its role as an arena is still alive today, when in July and August it becomes the theatre for the famous horse-race, the Palio. For a whole year the entire city of Siena nurses the Palio fever, looking forward to those few minutes when the seventeen contrade of the city release their horses onto the track of the Piazza del Campo, dreaming of victory. You can only admire the courage of those who chose to build a city such as Siena. A walk through its streets and alleys inspires feelings of delight and wonder. The nearby towns bask in the reflected glow of Siena’s beauty, and are taken over by it. A landscape of rain-sculpted valleys where the chalk and clay have formed strange shapes like minarets of sand; rows of cypresses, severe in winter and gentle in spring, are flooded by the sun in summer. The villages of the Val d’Orcia are jewels of Renaissance architecture, while Pienza is often held up as an example of the “perfect city”. The “Colline Metallifere” (a series of volcanic hills with ‘hot-rocks’) are the wild heart of Tuscany. The wine is famous here: the hills of Montalcino have bequeathed to the world the myth of Brunello
The average annual temperature is 16 ° C
