The Tuscany region
Enchanting cities rich in art and history, the woods, hills and fragrant vineyards. And then, of course, there is the sea. A history as the crib of the Renaissance and the birth place of men such as Dante, Leonardo and Michelangelo. An extremely enticing gastronomic tradition. An atmosphere that is so relaxing, it seems that time slows down acquiring a delightful intensity. Among the Italian regions, Tuscany is one of the most beloved.
Florence / Greve in Chianti area
Chianti is famous both for its scenery and for the fruits its land bears. The countryside is dotted with farmhouses and cottages which today are the holiday homes for an exclusive form of tourism in Tuscany. The beautiful Chianti hamlets often let you come face to face with fortified Medieval castles which bear witness to the ancient historical battles between Siena and Florence but Romanesque parish churches can be found on the gently rolling hills of this countryside too.
From Greve travelling past acre after acre of vineyards and uncontaminated forests you will reach Radda in Chianti which was once the capital of the Chianti league as well as the watershed between the Pesa valley and that of the Arbia valley. The exquisite wine which is produced here, whose origins can be traced back to the Etruscan era, has indeed given this Italian region its prestige and international reputation.
The Chianti area is protected by two important consortiums: il Consorzio del Vino Chianti Classico (the Chianti Classico wine consortium) and il Consorzio del Gallo Nero (the black rooster consortium) the latter deriving its name from the historical Lega del Chianti (Chianti league) founded in the 13th century by the communities of Castellina, Radda and Gaiole. The hills clad in vineyards are particularly enchanting as are its oak, chestnut and holm-oak forests.
