Home description

Open the door to a beautiful marble entry which leads you to the elevator taking you to the second floor apartment. The apartment is furnished with a blend of antique and modern furnishings, and has typical Tuscan terracotta floors throughout. The apartment orientation away from the street and facing an internal courtyard provides a quiet retreat in the heart of the city.

On the entry level, the foyer leads you to the light-filled open kitchen, dining and living area with a balcony overlooking the courtyard. A spacious bathroom with bathtub is also on this floor. To provide additional privacy, the bedrooms and a bathroom with shower are located on the lower level.

The neighbourhood is typically Florentine, near the Sant’Ambrogio market where you’ll find meat, produce and groceries, as well as restaurants such as Cibreo and the Enotecca Pinchiorri. You will find this central neighbourhood, and especially our apartment, an excellent choice for your stay in Florence.

The Tuscany region

The region now known as modern Tuscany corresponds to the former area of Etruria. However, the Etruscans were not the first people to grace this land. It was in prehistoric times that man left indications of his presence and there is evidence of small tribal settlements up to the Iron Age. The first evidence of the Etruscans was from around 800 BC from which time the land began to change towards its modern format.

The history of Tuscany is crammed with centuries of changes wand struggles from the Etruscans to being swallowed by the Rome Empire. Then the destruction of Rome by the conquering German Barbarians, Odoacre and the Goths. This was followed by being governed by the Lombards and the Franks, through the Middle Ages to the Medici and the Renaissance. Then finally into Modern times.

It is interesting to note that Tuscany's wealth came, not from the land, but from commerce and from its unique position at the centre of trade routes within the Mediterranean basin. In fact, the emergence of Florence, Lucca, Pisa, and Arezzo, and the evolution of the new city-states of Siena, Pistoia, Prato, and other towns such as San Gimignano, Volterra, Livorno, Colle val d'Elsa, and Grosseto is due to extensive trade.

Neverthless, throughout most of its history this whole area has been a prosperous region for agriculture and a central point for communication for road, sea ports, railways and industry. Now it is well established as a great tourist location.

Florence / Central Florence area

FLORENCE, capital of the region of Tuscany, has a population of around half a million inhabitants, spreads on the banks of the Arno, between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian seas, almost in the middle of the Italian peninsula. It is a city which bustles with industry and craft, commerce and culture, art and science.

Being on the main national railway lines, it is easily accessible from most important places both in Italy and abroad. The Florence "Vespucci" airport, where both national and international airlines stop, is located 5 Km. from the city centre. The main motorway, A1, connects Florence with Bologna and Milano in the North and Rome and Naples in the South. The motorway A11 to the sea joins it to Prato, Pistoia, Montecatini, Lucca, Pisa and all the resorts on the Tyrrhenian sea. There is also motorway which connects Florence to Siena. The climate is temperate but rather variable, with breezy winters and hot summers.

The Chianti area, between Florence and Siena, is one of the most beautiful countrysides in Italy and a famous wine production area.

Florence contains an exceptional artistic patrimony, glorious testimony to its secular civilization. Cimabue and Giotto, the fathers of Italian painting, lived here, along with Arnolfo and Andrea Pisano, reformists of architecture and sculpture; Brunelleschi, Donatello and Masaccio, founders of the Renaissance; Ghiberti and the Della Robbia; Filippo Lippi and l'Angelico; Botticelli and Paolo Uccello; the universal geniuses Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Their works, along with those of many generations of artists up to the masters of the present century, are gathered in the city's many museums.

In Florence, thanks to Dante, the Italian language was born; with Petrarch and Boccaccio literary studies were affirmed; with Humanism the philosophy and values of classical civilization were revived; with Machiavelli modern political science was born; with Guicciardini, historical prose; and with Galileo, modern experimental science. Up to the time of Charlemagne, Florence was a university town. Today it includes many specialized institutes and is an international cultural centre. Academies, art schools, scientific institutes and cultural centres all contribute to the city's intense activity.
