Description: The district of Campo di Marte is located to the north-east of the historical centre and was constructed in 1812 as an area to train the Tuscan army. In the 1930s the area was reconverted for sports and is still home today to most of the citys sports facilities. The main thoroughfare, the Viale dei Mille connects the Plaza delle Cure to the Artemio Franchi Stadium. The Square owes its name to the ancient profession of curandai (washer women) as their place of work. A walk along the Via dei Mille leads to the Via Boccaccio and allows visitors to see the fascinating Villa Palmieri that dates back to the XIV century. The last of the owners created an English-style park with a number of exotic plants and architectural features such as the Fonte dei tre visi and a neo-baroque style chapel. The stadium is the most important centre of sports facilities in the city and includes swimming pools, and the athletics stadium as well as being a well-known venue for some of the top music concerts. A little further along the Viale dei Mille leads to the Iglesia dei Sette Santi Fondatori that dates back to the beginning of the 1900 and is decorated with many of the works of painter and sculptor Giusepppe Cassioli. The district offers numerous possibilities for original night life entertainment including some of the most important theatres such as the Saschall, a modern, multi-functional venue that hosts both theatrical works and concerts. Leading off from the Viale dei Mille is the Piazza Vasari, a beautiful open, green square which was formerly not part of the city and outside its walls; a fact that is evident from the two customs houses located there, used for charging visitors a toll to enter the city.
