The Tuscany region
Tuscany (Italian Toscana) is a region in central Italy, bordering on Latium to the south, Umbria and Marche to the east, Emilia-Romagna and Liguria to the north, and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west. It is often regarded as among the most beautiful parts of Italy.
Tuscany was the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, and its artistic heritage includes architecture, painting and sculpture, collected in dozens of museums, the best-known of which is the Uffizi and the Bargello in Florence, but also in many other towns and cities in the region.Tuscany was the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Dante Alighieri ("the father of the Italian language"). Tuscany is known for its wines (most famous of which are Chianti, Morellino di Scansano and Brunello di Montalcino) and has 120 protected regions (nature reserves).
Notable tourist destinations in Tuscany include Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Arezzo, Pisa, Lucca, Barga, the Maremma, the Crete Senesi, the Lunigiana and Garfagnana areas, and the island of Elba.
Florence / Central Florence area
Florence (It. Provincia di Firenze) is a province in the Tuscany region of Italy, with an area of 3,514 sq. km and a population of 933,860 (2001) in 44 comuni.
Much of the province lies in the plain of the Arno river and has thus become an exurban sprawl around the city of Florence. The northeastern part of the province, in the Apennines, has escaped this fate and remains unspoiled.
The city or comune of Florence is the capital both of the Province and the Region of Tuscany; particular places of beauty or interest in the province include Barberino Val d'Elsa, Fiesole, Greve in Chianti and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa. Florence (Italian: Firenze) is the capital city of the region of Tuscany, Italy. From 1865 to 1870 the city was also the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. Florence lies on the Arno River and has a population of around 400,000 people, plus a suburban population in excess of 200,000 persons. The greater area has some 956,000 people. A centre of medieval European trade and finance, the city is often considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and was long ruled by the Medici family. Florence is also famous for its fine art and architecture. It is said that, of the 1,000 most important European artists of the second millennium, 350 lived or worked in Florence. In fact, the city has also been called the Athens of the Middle Ages.
The historic Centre of Florence was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1982.
Florence is conveniently linked to Rome by fast trains (only 1and half hours). Florence is also only one our ride by train to the sea side resort (Versilia)

Guestbook for Appartamento Uzzano
"We totally enjoyed staying in Claudia's flat, very comfortable, nice view, close to the River Anu, and Florence main attractions, frequent bus service. Very clean, with friendly service. everything as advertised on Internet. Good value for money." Tom & Manijeh, Bristol, UK
"Claudias apartment is upstream of the Arno in a quiet residential suburb. It's well equipped, comfortable and 10 minutes by bus from the Duomo. Hence you will be well connected by rail to other important cultural centres, including Rome, Perugia, Bologna, Padua and day trips are certainly feasible. Claudia and Giancarlo do their best to make you feel at home but equally if you want to organise your own visit they are sensitive and unobtrusive hosts. If you bring your laptop and are WIFI enabled Giancarlo will help you to set it up so that you can keep in contact with friends and relatives, look up references to the art treasures all around you, or just check on the route number and times of the bus to Fiesole. This was my fourth visit to Florence but I am by no means a veteran; I'm continually finding new wonders. For example: Andreas del Sartos' 'Cenacolo' in the convent of San Salvi is within walking distance as is, by the way, the local supermarket where shopping for food is inexpensive and unencumbered by the neccessity of conversational fluency. I spent two enjoyable and productive weeks as Claudia's guest, acquired a tan, added to my store of memories and, springing up like dragons' teeth, new questions (who was Starnina? what's in that jar?) that make it inevitable I'll return. Oh yes, the Campo del Santo stadium is a bus ride away too, if you're visiting during the football season and want to watch some Seria 'A' Italian (Fiorentina del Viola) football!". Ian, London, UK
"Dear Claudia! Thank you very much for a wonderful 2 days [...] Take care." Torben, Copenhagen, Denmark
"Hi Claudia! We had a wonderful time staying here. It was the perfect distance to walk to the city and close to everything, Thankyou for sharing your home". Melissa & Morgan, Vancouver, Canada
