Home description

Il Casellino is an estate of approximately 40 hectares, which aside from the extensive olive groves also boasts an orchard, a vegetable garden and a cutting garden to supply guests with fresh flowers and produce as well as supplying the raw materials for an excellent selection of preserves made personally by the owners. The eighteen hectares of woods on the property are rich with wildlife for nature lovers. Every effort is made to preserve the natural environment of these woods and therefore are also full of botanical species of great interest.

Great care has been taken in the restoration of the original buildings to provide for beautiful homes. Antique furniture and modern amenities made these homes welcoming and comfortable. All homes are equipped with outdoor eating facilities to enjoy to the fullest lovely summer evenings. Set in an olive grove, the beautifully landscaped swimming pool (21 x 9 metres) is surrounded by an attractive stone terrace and has stunning views over the surrounding countryside.

The heart of Chianti region makes Il Casellino the perfect starting point for a perfect Tuscan vacation.

The Tuscany region

Generally the climate in Tuscany is very mild. However, there are small variations between the regions due to the geography of the area. The coast and in the valleys the summers are hotter than in the hills, where the climate is very continental and rain falls more often.

The summers in Tuscany are very hot and without rain especially in the valleys. Spring (April and May) and Autumn (October and November) are dry, sunny days but the chances of rain are higher. The Winter has sunny, mild days and it can get very cold at night particularly in the hilly areas. As expected July is the hottest month with temperatures ranging from 23°C up to 30°C; the valleys can often see higher temperatures and 38 oC to 40 oC is not uncommon. January is the coldest month with about 7°C at the coast and about 3.5°C to 5.5°C inland. The temperature in the mountains can get below freezing.

The busiest time in Tuscany (and Italy generally) is August when the Italians are on holiday. Both July and August are very busy but the main tourist season stretches from mid-April to the end of September. The best time to visit Italy and Tuscany for holidays is the quieter part of the season, from April to June and from September to October, when the weather is usually good, the prices are lower and there are fewer tourists.

Just beware that tourists crowd the major cities at Easter, when Italians flock to resorts and the countryside. The weather is warm enough for beach visits in most of the country from June to September but during August (high season) it is very hot.

Florence / Rignano sull'Arno area

Spring : TUSCANYbegins to wake from winter as Easter approaches. The hillsides are vibrant with the soft green of new leaves and the scent of fresh growth. Even in the cities there is a sense of renewal as hanging baskets and window boxes are displayed outside from April onwards, and wisteria and iris bloom in the public gardens.

Summer: From June onwards, Tuscany’s festive calendar becomes increasingly crowded with scores of small town festivals, many of them taking place around Midsummer Day, the feast of John the Baptist, on 24 June. These provide an opportunity to sample local food and wine and join in the atmosphere, or to check out some of the bigger set-piece festivals.

Autumn IS THE SEASON of the vendemmia, the grape harvest, which is often used as an excuse for village festivities at which the local wines flow in quantity. The Tuscans are also passionate about fresh funghi (mush-rooms), which will appear on restaurant menus and feature on market stalls. The first frosts will occur any time from the end of October, and at this point the great tracts of woodland all over Tuscany begin to turn brilliant shades of red and gold.

Winter: THIS CAN BE a good time to visit Florence and enjoy the city's museums and churches in tranquillity. It can be bitterly cold, but the skies are blue and the city is often bathed in golden sunlight, making this many photographers' favourite season. All over Tuscany, town squares are filled with the aroma of roasting chestnuts, and in December, the last of the olive crop is being harvested in the southernmost parts.

IT SEEMED TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, this dreamlike place, like a movie set, which right away set its own anxious challenge: How could our experience ever live up to such a setting?
