The Mauritius West Coast/Flic en Flac region
The west Coast is mainly the Black River district which is famous for the Sandy white beaches, Tamarin Falls and the Chamarel coloured earth. It is the third largest District of Mauritius in area, but the smallest in terms of population. It contains much of Mauritius' unique tropical forests, including those found in the Black River Gorges. During winter deer hunting is practised in the forests.
The name Black River derives from the fact that it is the driest district of the island. This region receives less rainfall than the others.
And this has become its advantage : Several fisherman villages have been progressively converted to tourist areas. For example, Flic en Flac, Tamarin and Le Morne.
Tamarin is the only area where surfing is possible during the month of July and August.
Flic-en-Flac is the longest beach on the island and certainly one of the most beautiful ones. Being on the west coast it gives view to beautiful sunsets.
Scuba Diving is very popular in the west coast specially in Flic en Flac. Well know dive sites such as Cathedrale, Snake reef, TUG II Wreck, Couline bambous, KAI SEI Wreck and Canon are visited by diving enthusiasts from al over the world all year round.
Le Morne has become famous because of the mountain where, during colonial times, runaway slaves used to hide and to kill themselves when they were to be caught. Efforts are being made by local authorities to get Le Morne inscribed on the World Heritage List.
Le Morne's unique constant wind effects makes it a top kite surfing/wind surfing destination. Frequently both board and kite manufacturers can be seen trialling their next generation equipment in this prime location. The wind is prevalent through the winter months (May-Sept). On occasion, with the right waves conditions, the reef outside Le Morne can be surfed.
Flic-en-Flac area
Flic en Flac derived its name from an Old Dutch phrase "Fried Landt Flaak" that literally means "Free and Flat Land."
During the 1960s the village was known only for its cemetery some artisanal hunting of wild ducks and birds in the marches of the region. Several five stars hotels were allowed to be built in the region of Flic en Flac. When Flic en Flac became popular, wealthy Mauritians settled abroad bought land in the area to build bungalows where they intended to stay during their holidays. During their absence they rented it to other tourists and rapidly Flic en Flac became known for its self catering accommodations.
Progressively all facilities became available in Flic en Flac. It has now its bank, pharmacy, supermarket, several restaurants, Scuba diving centres and a disco.
Not to forget that Flic en Flac is found on the western coast and that the area has the nicest beaches of the island protected by the surrounding coral reefs. The region is protected from the South east trade winds by a chain of mountains. Every day Sunset over the horizon is an attraction for those in search of Romance with their partners.
