The Basse-Normandie region

Breel is a pretty little hamlet nestling in the stunning surroundings of the beautiful Suisse Normande region, so called because it`s one of the hillier places in this region. Along with rustic scenes of cattle and sheep grazing all around, and the clucks and cackles of home kept chickens and geese (many homes are self sufficient in poultry, as well as fruit and veg....)....there are steep hills and deep ravines, open panoramic views into the Falaise `gap`, and bustling market towns just a short drive away in any direction. You`re not far from the coast (Granville, Honfleur...), which also means you`re within 50 minutes of the ferries at Caen-Ouistreham. From here you can drive further south to the chateau studded Loire Valley, or walk your socks off, if that`s what you enjoy--just up the road from the cottage is the famous beauty spot, the Roche D`Oetre, with its panoramic views and breathtaking dips into steep ravines and the River Rouvre rushing through below. Staying here will give you a real slice of French rural life--with the comforts and cosiness of home. Your breakfast baguettes and croissants are just a five minute drive away in the village of Segrie Fontaine. You can mooch round the lively markets in bustling Flers or historic Falaise, the home of William the Conqueror (the castle is well worth a visit!). Both are just 20 mins away. LIke art? Look out for the Normandy Impressionists` Festival this summer!

Flers

You can pick up a map from the bookshelf and start your walk along the marked ramblers` routes pretty much from the doorstep, or go cycling in this lovely area. There are great days out and drives if you fancy going further afield for a shot of history and culture (Caen, Rouen, Bayeux, Honfleur....), or you can head for the beach at Granville or catch the early train to Paris from Flers and be there by nine. If you just need to chill out, or escape with someone special, the cottage is perfect for that too, with its cosy sofas, log fire, full central heating, attractive, decor , private garden with barbecue, and even a mini vino veranda for your morning coffee or bottle of bubbly. Take time to wander down into the village with its simple but lovely 16th century Church and the special memorial bought and installed by expats and local residents to remember the RAF airmen who are part of Breel`s history. All around you are apple orchards, and the local poiree and apple ciders are delicious--we can recommend a family run farm just up the lane where you can buy cider very reasonably to take home for your friends. (Or yourself....!)
