The Salzburg Region

Flachau is situated in the North Eastern European Alps. It is easily accessed via the A10 motorway, exit 66. Neighbouring ski areas include Wagrain, Alpendorf, Zauchensee, Altenmarkt, St Johann im Pongau, Reiteralm, Flachauwinkl, Klienarl, Eben, Filzmoos, Marialm, Deisten and Schladming (all within 5 to 25 minute drive). Nearby glaciers at Kaprun, and Dachstein (30 to 45 minute drive).

You can't see or hear the motorway in Flachau following the completion of a new tunnel just after the Flachau junction.

The home of Hermann Maier, Flachau perfectly situated for snowsport enthusiasts. Nestled in the centre of Austria's biggest ski area, Ski Amadé, it boasts 840km of ski runs, 278 lifts, a range of pisted skiing to suit all levels, plus some challenging world cup race pistes, numerous off piste and backcountry skiing routes, plus many cross country routes and trails. Flachau was the nominated host resort in Salzburg's recent bid to hold the Winter Olympics proving its Internationally renowned capability as a premium resort. In addition to having excellent snow cover, due to its location in the coldest region in the Alps, it maintains excellent snowmaking facilities and even heated chairlifts! Such is there snow making capability, with no snow on the ground in early November, Flachau confidently stepped in to rescue a World Cup Slalom race from being cancelled due to a lack of snow in the host Finnish resort.

Flachau is a top resort when it comes to eating out and nightlife, with live music every night of the ski season in the Musistadl, a very large converted barn. It is not unusual for non-residents to be bussed in for the famous Apres Ski in the Hofstadl. Get there early and grab the table above the bar that serves drinks via cable car! If you want a meal out many of the restaurants closest to the apartment are some of the best including the Hoagasht, which serves modern cuisine in a tradional atmosphere. The food is excellent and the converted cow barn creates a unique atmosphere. The Schusterhausel, a old cobblers house, is great for meat lovers. Pizzas and traditional Austrian Cuisine can be found in the Kaiserstuben which also has a large play room for kids downstairs. For a unique experience, consider taki a taxi up to the Sattelbauer for a traditional Austrian meal, then sledging all the way back to the apartment.

There are bars to suit all tastes, from the modern and sophisticated Fire & Ice, through to Ema's the Irish pub, which also incidentally has free wifi.

In the non-skiing months, there are lots of outdoor activities, including golf, mini golf, horse riding, zorbing, summer bobsleigh, tennis, white water rafting, rock climbing, downhill mountiain biking, segway tours, and not forgetting all the hiking & biking trails. The ski lifts are still operational in summer getting you and your mountain bike up on the alp in only a few minutes. Many mountain restaurants also remain open during the summer months. There is also still skiing available on the Dachstein, Molltal and Kaprun glaciers. Cycle hire including child carriers are available to rent locally, and access to paved cycle routes tracked throughout the Flachau valley provide amazing scenic opportunities. Nearby, there are outdoor swimming lakes, with restaurans, abd loads of activities, including zip lines over the water! With Salzburg only 45 minutes away, there is haute couture shopping, and world famous music festivals.

"One Small Bedroom and a lounge sofa-bed not Two Bedrooms!!!"

On arrival we were disappointed to find only one small bedroom containing small single beds which were only just big enough for our 11 and 13 year olds. There was no other bedroom only a sofa-bed whic… More

In the five years we have rented our apartment to over two hundred holidaymakers, we have consistently received happy feedback. The apartment rental rate is very competitively priced considering its central location, quality of refurbishment, size and amenities (swimming pool, sauna etc.).
Our aim is to give as clear a picture as possible with the listing and photographs; it is advised to list ski apartments by number of dormitories, or rooms for sleeping in, which is two; but I am sorry if you found the description of the sleeping arrangements as stated in the advert unclear: “Furniture: 1 Sofa bed, Single beds (2), Cots (1)” .
For the benefit of other enquirers, we would like to address some other specific points you raise:

• "one pillow and what could be described as a flat cushion": The six plump! pillows and extra bed linen are stored both under the single storage beds and in the sofa-bed. Perhaps someone had moved the pillows from the sofa-bed storage compartment to make it easier to close as they are so plump! Both down and man-made fibre pillows are provided.

• "small single beds which were only just big enough for our 11 and 13 year olds": The beds are a standard single size.

• “a sofa-bed which took real effort to construct”. The sofa bed was bought recently from Ikea; we bought it having found favourable reviews online. Setting the bed up involves pulling a drawer out and raising the contained mattress.

• "the pans, which are old with no non stick coating making cleaning difficult": The apartment was supplied with a new Tefal Circulon non stick frying pan and Circulon medium saucepan in the last six months to add to the old but quality non stick sauce pans (I used to run the Steamer Trading Flagship Cookshop in Brighton, so I know!); we will replace any of these if they have been damaged by other guests and have sent a message to our house keeper concerning this. There is a brand new dishwasher available to aid washing up.

• "The TV is so small, 18 inch at most, so that watching movies is hard and the volume is very limited": The 20” SMART Samsung TV was added six months ago. We purposefully chose the model of TV based on Best Buy Which? Reviews, where no issue with volume was identified nor experienced by ourselves. We didn't want a large TV dominating the room and feel it is an ample size to be enjoyed by movie lovers.

• I'm afraid we cannot stop Flachau from snow clearing, this only ever happens when it snows and normally that's a good sign for snowsports enthusiasts!

"Comfortable and convenient-a great weeks holiday!"

The appartment is in a convenient location, less than 45 minutes by car from Salzburg Airport. Spar shop and supermarket in Flachau was very handy, and we were able to explore the area which is absolutely stunning!! There's not a lot open/going on in Flachau out of season, but this didn't dampen our enjoyment at all. Would thoroughly recommend this property, and the pool was brilliant-very convenient! Thanks for a great week!
