The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region
Fitou is in the heart of France's largest wine growing region and the local wines are abundant and delicious. Fresh local produce such as olives, olive oil, cheeses, fresh herbs, bread and fish are available at numerous markets, including the splendid Les Halles in Narbonne. This is a must for wine and food lovers.
The Mediterranean coastline of this region stretches from the Camargue, where wild horses roam through wetlands, to the Spanish border mountains of the Pyrenees. Enjoy spectacular beaches, waterfront cafe and restaurants, and explore the Cathar Trail with its many medieval castles. Visit the wonderfully preserved medieval fortress city of Carcassonne (1 hr), ancient Roman ruins in Nimes and Collioure (built upon Roman foundations, the castle was once the summer residence of the Kings of Mallorca).
Nearby Leucate Village has a market Tuesday, Friday and Sunday mornings in the Place de la Republique. For more shopping, visit the larger towns of Perpignan and Narbonne, about 30 minutes by car.
To the south, Cadaques, Spain, Salvadore Dali's home, is 2 hours, as is Barcelona,
The neighbouring area has several excellent beaches and is ideal for watersports including windsurfing, kayaking, kite surfing, white water rafting, and snorkelling and there's a wake board park. There are also designated cycling routes and excellent walks. And good fishing areas.
Visit the African Reserve (Zoo) in Sigean which includes both a traditional zoo and a large drive-through wildlife park where you can feed animals from your car. Go-Karting, a Water Park and an Adventure Park are just a short drive away.

Fitou area
Fitou's mild temperatures and sun-filled days (300 days of sunshine a year) --even in the winter months--make it a favourite year-round holiday destination. After two weeks of visiting 40 villages throughout the Laungedoc, we fell in love with Fitou.
It's a traditional French/Catalan village with friendly, welcoming locals. Nearby are beautiful beaches, oyster beds, carefully tended vineyards, degustations (for free wine tastings), excellent restaurants, and a cafe that spills out onto the village square.
La Franqui Beach (12 minutes) is flat sand with few rocks and is shallow for metres into the Mediterranean. Leucate Beach is rarely crowded even in high season. La Plage des Coussoules has wild beaches and sand yachting.
Nearby Leucate is a landmark for migrating birds.
