The Languedoc-Roussillon region
Languedoc is an exciting region to visit at any time of the year. The climate is warm and sunny with over 300 days of sunshine each year
Languedoc-Roussillon is France's southernmost region bordered by Spain, Andorra and the Pyrénées Mountains and boasts everything from mountains and rivers to lakes and the Mediterranean Sea.
The region has a long coastline of virtually uninterrupted, sandy beaches and picturesque fishing villages and ports. Watersports including wind/kite surfing, sailing, canoeing, diving and water skiing can be found on the coast whilst activities such as, mountain biking, rock climbing, horse riding, white water rafting, hiking and golf are also available nearby. The ski resorts of the Pyrénées mountains are just a 90 minute drive away.
The local area offers lots of family activities and days out such as the underground caves at Ville-Franche (40mins), the little yellow train that travels up the Pyrénées mountains (40 mins), a fantastic African safari park with over 3000 animals at Sigean (15 mins) as well as a whole host of adventure and water parks (20 mins).
The region is littered with historical monuments, abbeys and castles and boasts several UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Pont du Gard, the Canal du Midi, the medieval walled city at Carcassonne and the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, which take in the abbey of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert and the abbey church of Saint-Gilles. You can follow the pathway of the Cathars and their castles. A short tripover the border in to Spain will take you to Figueres where you can visit the famous Dail museum and the region is famous for it's great painters like Matisse and Picasso who once found inspiration in the beauty and light of ports such as Collioure, Banyuls, Port-Vendres and Cerbère.
Perpignan, with it’s strong Catalan influence is a 20 minute drive away where you will find a maze of chic boutiques and busy pavement bars, cafés and restaurants.
The local culture is brought to life in carnivals and festivals, such as the traditional celebrations of the bull in the nearby Catalan towns and villages, the fishermen’s festivals at Gruissan, Sète and Bouzigues; and traditional maritime jousting tournaments at Sète and Mèze. During July and August music festivals are held in most towns and villages.
There is a medieval chateau within a 10 minute walk that has a museum, gift shop and bar where tapas is served. Live music is performed most weekends during the mid and high season. Fitou has a newsagents/bar, supermarket, hairdresser, post office, tourist office and a doctor’s surgery. There is a football stadium, a hard surface football/basketball court with a small climbing wall, a table tennis table, a children's playground, a bouladrome and a tennis court.
The village comes to life in July and August when you can experience regular musical evenings outside the local bar; the annual wine fete at the beginning of August and the twice yearly 'sardinade', a traditional festival where hundreds of sardines are cooked over an open fire and served with French bread and lots of red wine!

"Nice accommodation but not without it's problems"
Lovely accommodation with excellent views over the Mediterranean. We had a lovely time albeit a bit windy as the apartment is perched high above fitou. Apartment was immaculate and surprisingly cool… More
We are very pleased you enjoyed your holiday and the apartment was well presented. Our prices include an end of holiday clean. However, in this case the cleaners needed to carry out an extra 3 hours work over and above a normal changeover clean to bring it back to the standard you found it in. A small retention of £30 was kept to pay for the extra work. This is most unusual.
