The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

Languedoc-Roussillon is France's southernmost region borderred by Spain, Andorra and the Pyrenees Mountains and boasts everything from mountains and rivers to lakes and the Mediterranean Sea.
The region has a long coastline of virtually uninterrupted white, sandy beaches and picturesque fishing villages and ports. Watersports including wind/kite surfing, sailing, canoeing, diving and water skiing can be found on the coast whilst activities such as cannyoning, mountain biking, rock climbing, horse riding, white water rafting, hiking and golf are also available nearby. The ski resorts of the Pyrenees mountains are just a 90 minute drive away.
The local area offers lots of family activities and days out such as the underground caves at Ville-Franche (40mins), the little yellow train that travels up the Pyrenees mountains (40 mins), a fantastic African safari park with over 3000 animals (15 mins) as well as a whole host of adventure and water parks (20 mins).
The region is littered with historical monuments, abbeys and castles and boasts several UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Pont du Gard, the Canal du Midi, the medieval walled city at Carcassonne and the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, which take in the abbey of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert and the abbey church of Saint-Gilles. A short trip over the border in to Spain will take you to Figueres where you can visit the famous Dail museum and the region is famous for it's great painters like Matisse and Picasso who once found inspiration in the beauty and light of ports such as Collioure, Banyuls, Port-Vendres and Cerbère.
Perpignan, with it’s strong Catalan influence is a 20 minute drive away where you will find a maze of chiq boutiques and busy pavement bars, cafés and restaurants.
The local culture is brought to life in carnivals and festivals, such as the traditional celebrations of the bull in the nearby Catalan towns and villages, the fishermen’s festivals at Gruissan, Sète and Bouzigues; and traditional maritime jousting tournaments at Sète and Mèze. During July and August music festivals are held in most towns and villages.
Languedoc is an exciting region to visit at any time of the year. The climate is warm and sunny with over 300 days of sunshine each year.
The Fitou area
Fitou is a famous wine village offering ample opportunity to sample the local wine in it's many village caves. There are also four great restaurants within a ten minute walk of the villa. All serve superb food and offer a unique French atmosphere. At the Vidal restaurant you can indulge in an amazing seafood and cold meats buffet whilst being entertained by the Grandfather on his saxaphone....a truly unforgettable experience! At Cave D'Agnes restaurant, a converted barn, the food tends to be traditionally French with options such as foie gras, oysters, goats cheese, steak rossini and seabass.
There is also a medieval chateau within a 10 minute walk that has a museum, gift shop and bar where tapas is served. Live music is performed most weekends during the mid and high season.
The village also offers some additional restaurants, a pizza take-away, a bar/ tabac, a supermarket and a doctors surgery.
There is a football stadium, a hard surface football/basketball court with a small climbing wall, a table tennis table, a children's playground, a skate park, a bouladrome and a tennis court.
The village comes to life in July and August when you can experience regular musical evenings outside the local bar; the annual wine fete at the beginning of August and the twice yearly 'sardinade', a traditional festival where hundreds of sardines are cooked over an open fire and served with French bread and lots of red wine!

We stayed in Villa Bellevue in June with some friends and our dog Bessie, all adults and no kids. The villa is lovely, all on one level and very well equipped. We mainly cooked and barbequed at the villa most evenings because it was so well equipped and the outside eating areas (there are several) were lovely. When we did go out it was just a short stroll to the village and we ate at The Moulin and also the restaurant Vidal. Both were fantasic. and the food was really French. Lots of locals eating there and not too many tourists. We also had an evening at the chateau and a live band were playing outside. It was a perfect setting with views over the village out to the sea. The pool was well used by our party, it was a good size and relatively private. The double bedrooms were perfect, clean and bright with large fitted wardrobes. The master bedroom had a huge, very comfy ,double bed and patio doors looked out onto the pool terrace. Even though wi-fi was not advertised with the villa the owners set it up for us to use which was a real bonus. Locally we visited Collioure, Carcassone, Ville Franche de Conflent and Narboone. All worth a visit and highly recomended. As fans of Rick Stein we particularly loved seeing the Canal du Midi and visiting the indoor food market at Narbonne. The owners lived locally and were very friendly but not intrusive. They gave us lots of information on the area and were always available if we needed them. We will definately go back!! |

We stayed with our two children, toddler aged 22 months and baby 12 weeks old accompanied by friends witha toddler the same age as our own. Flew to Bezier, which is a great little airport so no long trek from the plane through the terminal with the kids to collect luggage. Car hire from Hertz (top tip..complete the online form as it does save you time at the airport) was simple and the cars are about 30 yards from terminal exit...easy! Fitou very easy to find from the main road and is a lovely quiet village which the villa sits on the hill overlooking. This villa is fantastic with lots of space. Big, well equiped kitchen with open plan dining area and sitting room. Four large double rooms with plenty of cupboard space and 2 bathrooms. Lots of private outside lounging around areas so you can sit in the sun pretty much all day long if you choose. Pool is great and enclosed so that you can keep kids safe. Owner of the villa, Anne, popped in to say hi on our arrival and came bearing two bottles of the local red and white muscat wine. She was very helpful and gave lots of tips on which beaches to go to, where to eat and more importantly buy the best wine. She even ordered pizza from the takeaway for us as all shops were closed on the Sunday! We had a fantastic week, helped by the fact that for the first week of October it was an unseasonal 29 degrees! If you're looking for the perfect family villa in this part of the world I can't recommend highly enough. |
