The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

The Languedoc-Roussillon is the hottest and driest part of France, it is the largest wine producing region. The coast is long popular with French families, more recently discovered by the rest of Europe because of cheap airlines and good rail and motorway links. It offers maginificent beaches, ancient towns such as Carcossone, Narbonne, Montpellier and Perpignan. It has its own language, Occitane, hence 'Langue d'Oc, the language of the troubadours'. It has the turbulent history of a border region, and Spain and the Pyrennees, with its ski resorts, are only an hour away. The centre of the Cathar religous doctrine, which was ruthlessly supressed in the 13th century, has left a legacy of fortified castles and churches. Wild hills magnificent beaches and unspoilt villages characterise this magical landscape.
The Fitou area
Domaine des Capitelles is perched above Fitou which nestles in a deep gorge, with steps into village. Immediately on leaving the domaine are magnificent views of the Mediterranean coast, the Pyrenees and the Corbiere hills.
To the east are the coastal resorts of Port Leucate, Leucate Plage and Le Franqui (10 mins) separated by the salt water lagoons with its oyster beds, which you can sample in its famous oyster 'shacks'.
Just 20 minutes from Perpignan and an hour from Carcassone, Collioure, Ceret, Spain and the Pyrenees, where you can take 'the little yellow train' past snow topped Mt Canigou.
Places to visit include:
Numerous Cathar castles,Carcassone,- a world heritage site, -Perpignan, Narbonne, with its fantastic Sunday market, Montpellier, (voted the place most French people would like to live), Ceret, Collioure and Castres. There are also many delightful unspoilt villages, such as Lagrasse, officially recognised as one of France's most beautiful villages.Alternatively, trip into Spain to visit the Dali museum at Figueres, or much closer just 15 minutes to the wild animal park at Sigean. Watersports, boat and cycle hire are available from Port Leucate. Cycle hire is also available in the village. There is a Waterpark at Port Leucate.

We enjoyed a relaxing week in this moderrn, very well-appointed villa. Access was very easy from Perpignan Airport, and we used our rental car to visit the local towns and countryside of this unspoiled part of France. The local wine was particularly good, and every restaurant in the village was good value and served exceptional food. The sun shone warmly most days, sometimes with a fairly stiff breeze, so take a jacket! Response: Delighted that you had a lovely holiday.Thank you for your positive comments about the villa, and pleased that you had a chance to explore this lovely area. |
