The Ionian Islands region
Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands and lies between Lefkas and Zakynthos. It is blessed with great weather, dramatic scenery and boasts 39 beaches.
The North of the island is largely arable with olives being the main produce, whilst the south of the island hosts many tourists resorts and the islands capital, Argostoli.
The picturesque resorts of Assos and Fiscardo are well worth a visit and are steeped in tradition having pretty harbours with fishing boats, luxury yachts and many places to eat.
The Monastic ruins at the top of Assos are a bit of a climb but well worth the effort as the views are spectacular.
You can hire a boat in Fiscardo and nip over to Ithaca for the day or seek out a hidden bay for a relaxing sunbathe and swim.
The underground lake of Melissani and the Drogarati caves are fantastic and about half an hours drive away not too far from Sami which is the main port on the island and where you can get a ferry to the mainland.
Argostoli is the islands capital which buzzes with modern shops and nightlife.
Saint Gerasimos is the patron saint of the island and there is a religious feast to celebrate twice a year, in August and October.

"Beautiful villa with everything you need, in a quiet position. Private and yet near enough to civilisation."
We had a wonderful 2 weeks at this villa. Much needed peace and quiet set in a beautiful location with everything you could need at hand to help you relax and unwind. The villa is situated on the outskirts of a small village not far from the cosmopolitan harbour of Fiscardo. We were able to walk to the local shops and typical Greek taverna which provided the 'greekness' often missing in other locations, and also enabled us to leave the car at home!
We were very glad we hired a jeep as the drive down to the villa is a fairly steep dirt track at present, but as this is a newly renovated property this may have been altered now. I'm sure a car would cope equally as well but it made having the jeep worthwhile!! The area provides plenty of 'away from it all' beaches and the owners have supplied extremely useful information on places to go and things to do. Most welcome holiday, allowing us the 'wind-down' we so needed. Thank you Linda.
