WINTER
A traditional, pretty village perfect for families/ friends set amidst magnificent scenery at the foot of the Bischofsmutze mountain and Dachstein glacier, Filzmoos attracts guests who are looking for a typical Austrian village with many facilities close at hand. During the winter Filzmoos becomes a winter wonderland with uncluttered pistes and little or no queuing at the chair lifts – a rare commodity on the slopes these days.
There is plenty of space to roam with something to satisfy everyone from beginners to the more challenging run of Papageno, which boasts a six-person gondola giving access to marvellous descents directly down the village. The village is the heart of the community with the nursery slope and the children’s ski school being at the very centre.
SUMMER
In summer Filzmoos becomes a paradise for walkers, mountain bikers and anyone who enjoys being in the fresh alpine air. There is a large network of walking trails suitable for all abilities and ages with over 200km of footpaths with classified blue, red and black routes. Mountain bikers looking for a thrill can enjoy hundreds of challenging downhills or families of varying age and abilities can enjoy the easier trails on bike or foot.
You can also enjoy mountain biking, climbing, horse riding, visit the championship golf course at Schladming or visit the leisure centre with indoor & outdoor pool, health suite and two bowling lanes situated in the village. A new Thermal Spa in nearby Altenmarkt (15 mins drive) offers a fabulous day out. It has fast slides, a wave pool and indoor/outdoor relaxing areas for the whole family to enjoy. Mom or dad could treat themselves to a mud wrap or one of the many other treatments they have on offer. At nearby Dachstein you might be interested in paragliding and rafting or summer skiing on the glacier. There are also tennis courts and horse riding nearby.
There are many local places of interest to visit including the following:-
*Worlds largest Ice Caves at Werfen - www.eisriesenwelt.at (25 mins drive)
*Hohenwerfen Castle - a Medieval Fortress & falconry centre with daily displays (25 mins drive). Filming was done here for 'Where Eagles Dare'
*Eagles Nest ( Hitlers retreat - 45 mins drive) www.eagles-nest-historical-tours.com

*Championship golf course at Schladming (25 mins drive)
The Filzmoos area
The chalets are situated on a quiet hillside approx 20 min walk from the centre of the village. A shortcut takes 10 mins max but is quite steep. It is opposite a large wooded area with farmland to the rear - perfect for peace, quite and relaxation. A car would be useful but the walk to the village is very pleasant and not difficult and takes in some breath taking views on the way. A ski bus stops 100 meters from the chalets which collects and drops off at various points in the village. The bus runs every hour from 9am – 5pm, every day except Saturday. During summer there is a 'Wanderbus' that collects at the same point and does a route of the surrounding area and allows you to hop on and off at various points depending on your energy levels.
Filzmoos is famous for its food and offers fantastic restaurants with prices to suit every budget. There are 2 good pizza restaurants in the village and the Hanneshof do a great spag bol for €8. The 'Hubertus Hotel' has 2 Michelin stars and a very good reputation, but you need to book early. The 'Jagdhof' is situated on the mini island in the middle of the village and is a lovely treat. Happy Filzmoos is great for lunch or dinner and during winter is a hub of activity and the place to go for 'Apres' from 4-6pm and the 'Winepries' offers superb Asian cuisine in a contemporary setting. The Erlbacher Gerhard is famous for miles around for its rack of ribs. For €14.95 you get a rack (and a few more) baked potato/corn on the cob or garlic bread - you wont be disappointed! A fabulous coffee shop run by Gaby is situated by the mini island in the centre of the village and serves fantastic coffee, hot chocolate, apple strudel and much more. You can also buy fresh locally baked bread and croissants daily.
The indoor/outdoor pool/sauna centre with 2 bowling lanes is behind 'Happy Filzmoos' and well worth a visit as is the local farm which makes home made ice cream where you can watch the farm cows being milked on a Tuesday afternoon - check all local attractions with the excellent tourist board situated in the centre of the village.
Every Friday evening (weather permitting) Filzmoos brass band march proudly up the high street and settle in the beautiful band stand in the village square. Once a month local school children also provide a display of dancing to the brass band in their traditional Austrian costumes - Filzmoos works very hard to provide its guests with a holiday they will never forget!
During summer you will see/hear a lovely ritual behind the chalets. Every morning approx 8am the farmer behind our properties leads his 5 cows along a path to a gate, which he lets his cattle through, and they disappear for the day into the woods or wherever their fancy takes them. Last year there was a calf born in the woods but i think the farmer was a little surprised by an early delivery! From 4pm onwards you can hear a cow bell accompanied by mooing as they make their way home after a hard day of chewing the cud. They cross the road and wait outside the gate until the farmer or one of the family come and let them through to go home for their supper and bed!!!
During January, Filzmoos hosts the International Ballooning Festival which is an amazing sight - well worth a visit. Please visit the tourist board and speak to Heather (English speaking) and she will give you any information you need and advice on all activities taking place during your stay.
There are nursery facilities for children at the Filzmoos Ski School.

Not long since back from a brilliant weeks skiing. Enjoyed every second of it. Staying at Haus Ebner Chalet was definatley a very good decision. It is a lovely place warm and welcoming (helped by the under floor heating on entry!). With easy access to the slopes that are suitable for skiers of all levels, and a top quality apres ski you cant help but have a great holiday! |

As 6 students from Australia, we spent a long time weighing up our options for an Austrian Alps get away - and it was worth the time! Our picturesque log chalet in the ski town, Filzmoos, couldn't be flawed. We would wake up to uninterrupted views of towering pinnacles and the beautiful snow covered valley. Skiing or snowboarding by day was cheap - made cheaper by our landlords' discount for knowing the right people! - and a lively night scene to cap off each day. This is the place to be. Whether you're looking for two Michelin star cuisine (of which Filzmoos has one of two in all Austria) or a relaxing weekend get away we couldn't give a higher recommendation. To cap this off we had a wonderful host family next door that had no hesitation in helping us orient ourselves in the town and get the best out of our Christmas experience. 5 out of 5 for sure! |

This is the third time that we have stayed in one of Deborah's immaculately spotless chalets here in Filzmoos, which really says it all..The welcome basket on arrival instantly gives you a warm feel for the place . It's well equipped kitchen (together with all the basics such as tea, coffee etc provided) and lovely decor gives the chalet an instant homely atmosphere. The chalet is located up a hill giving it breathtaking views of the surrounding area, yet not remote as there is a bus stop approximately 50-100 metres away every hour 9.00am-5.00pm into the picturesque town of Filzmoos. The skiing in Filzmoos is excellent for both beginners (such as myself) but also advanced skiers. There is also a bus service to Flachau for the more accomplished skier should they relish the challenge. Yet again we have had a fantastic time and hope to go re-visit soon. |
