The Midi-Pyrenees / Lot region
The Lot region is an ancient land of hills and valleys, rivers and overhanging precipices. Bastide villages crown the craggy tops and perch precariously on the edge of sheer cliffs. Vineyards drape the lower slopes and oak forests romp over any uncultivated land. It’s an outstandingly beautiful landscape. Situated as it is, in the southwestern corner of France, close to the cosmospolitan town of Cahors and the fabulous city of Toulouse, it enjoys a delightfully warm, climate and an extended summer, warm weather often continues well into November
The gastronomy of the region is justly famous. The Ducks and Geese provide that most sumptuous of celebratory foods, foie gras. They also provide another delicious delicacy, confits.
But you don’t have to do anything. You can just lap it up. The overwhelming sense in this region is one of space, a slower pace of living and the peace and tranquillity of French countryside at its most stunning. The perfect place to relax.
Figeac / St Felix area
Figeac is in the Lot department of the Midi-Pyrenees, about 70 kilometres east of Cahors on the River Célé. Figeac is a town that you must visit when you are in the region! It is a beautiful small medieval town dating from the 9th century, and the town still has many houses and small palaces dating from the 13th - 16th centuries, when it was an important trade centre. These include notably the impressive town centre 'Hotel de la Monnaie'. It is however the overall feel of Figeac that you will find most attractive - the old colombage houses, houses with first floor balconies, and narrow streets lined with ancient cottages and ornate carvings.
The Lot countryside around Figeac is also very noteworthy, and provides ample scope for casual exploring or more serious outdoor sporting pursuits.
It is no surprise that this part of the Lot is a walker’s paradise. There are so many different terrains, all of them delightful. It’s a splendid feeling to be walking along the edge of a vineyard laden with grapes gently cooking in the sun, turn to walk through a short wood of dense oak and find yourself suddenly on the edge of a steep valley with an ancient stone church on one side and a ruined "gariotte" on the other. It happens all the time. There are hundreds of trails around the area, some of which have great religious significance as
Bikes for road or trail can be hired locally, or of course, you can bring your own. The local tourist office will be able to sell you a guide for a few euros containing maps showing the walking and mountain biking routes in the area (Guide de la Randonnee). The trails are usually clearly marked with coloured arrows and the guides show the route in detail and describe notable sights to look out for on the way.
As a whole, the Lot region has over 1,500 km of bridleways and more than 25 equestrian centres most of which are open throughout the year.
At Pradines near Cahors there is an adventure park set in a wooded valley, which allows visitors to climb rope ladders, abseil and cross aerial walkways. Suitable for children of 3 and above it will appeal to all those budding Tarzans.
Near Rocamadour is a prehistoric adventure park, the largest of its kind in Europe.
And near Gramat is an animal park, with over 1,000 animals
The river Lot is renowned for its fishing potential, especially for carp and black bass. There are specific sectors allocated to night fishing for carp and many large specimens have been caught.
The Gouffre at Padirac is a natural, 75 metre chasm that shows on the limestone plateau of the "Causse de Gramat" in the Lot, below which, at 103 metres underground flows a river.
Enjoy the local villages and market towns; and of course exploring the better known hilltop and cliffside towns of Rocamadour, St Cirq Lapopie, Cordes sur Ciel and Najac.
