The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

Turkey is an ideal place to relax and explore. With average temperatures on the Turquoise Coast during June to September of 30C+ and the hospitality of the locals being second to non, it has all the ingredients for an enjoyable holiday. Calis Beach is a 5km stretch of sand and shingle and benefits from an afternoon breeze which is particularly welcome in the hotter months.
The spectacular views of the sun setting over the Islands is a truly awesome sight. The best vantage point to watch the huge golden orb as it slowly sinks behind the mountains is whilst having a drink at one of the many bars and restaurants to be found along the promenade. There is an Aquapark in the centre of Calis and every Sunday Calis hosts it's own market - a visit is a real must for bargain hunters.
The Fethiye / Calis Beach area
PLACES TO GO
FETHIYE The thriving market town of Fethiye (known as the "City of Lights") is just 5km north of Calis and is easily reached by local dolmus or by frequent water taxis that take you across the bay from Calis to Fethiye and back. Fethiye was established in the 5th century BC and it's history can be traced back through the Lycian rock tombs (accessible by a stairway off the harbour), sarcophagi, the citadel and the theatre that are still resplendent in their present structure in the town. The town boasts a large market on a Tuesday as well as banks, supermarkets and restaurants, traditional Turkish Baths and a splendid fish market where you can purchase your fresh fish and have it cooked and brought to your table. From Fethiye you can explore further afield by taking the local dolmus to:
OLUDENIZ – BELCEKIZ The famous Oludeniz blue lagoon and the Belcekiz beach are known as "Blue Paradise". The World Heritage Babadag Mountain dominates the area and during the summer visitors have the opportunity to go paragliding either singly or in tandem off the mountain landing on Belcekiz beach below. The Blue Lagoon has calm crystal clear waters which makes it ideal for a variety of water sports and a safe place for children to swim.
UZUMLU A village 18kms from Fethiye grows the best types of grapes. The ladies of the village weave local pure cotton material known as "Dastar" on looms.
BUTTERFLY VALLEY, SAKLIKENT GORGE and the famous "ghost town" KAYAKOYU 7 kms south from Fethiye.
THINGS TO DO
The area offers many outdoor activities. These include:
PARAGLIDING Tandem or single paragliding off Babadag mountain. WATER SPORTS. CANOEING and KAYAKING down the Xanthos River. TREKING along the Lycian Way - the trek takes in tiny mountain villages inhabited by friendly, semi nomadic people. Alternatively, CYCLE along various tracks from Fethiye and Kalkan.
THE TWELVE ISLAND TOUR Sail on the blue waters of the turquoise sea for a day. The tour visits the islands around Fethiye Bay (food and drink are available). Numerous stops are made along the way so that you can swim, snorkel and take in the ruins found on many of the islands or just relax and top up your tan. Or why not book a PRIVATE BOAT TRIP Trip as above but exclusively for you and your party departing from the centre of Calis. Spend a day visiting the islands and coves on your own private boat. A sumptuous BBQ lunch is provided by the boat owner. HORSE RIDING for all levels of expertise. JEEP SAFARI Excursions are organised daily to different regions in and around Fethiye giving you the opportunity to visit historic sites and drive through the beautiful Taurus Mountains. TRUCK SAFARI A 6-wheel drive military people carrier refurbished for your comfort will take high into the mountains to visit the places the jeeps do not go. The trip takes you to the high mountain villages to experience, first hand, traditional Turkish nomadic life and culture
