The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Fantastic Fethiye is under one hour from Dalaman Airport in the County of Mugla. Fethiye, a market town of 50,000 people is located on the old city of Telmessos. Throughout the town numerous ancient sites includes rock tombs, sarcophagus, theatre and castle providing a fascinating history.
Fethiye is situated in the County of Mugla between Gocek and world famous Olu Deniz and its stunning beach and blue lagoon (photos on the front of most Turkish holiday magazines) The harbour and Paspatur Old City is where life centres with its attractive carpet shops, clothes boutiques, leather shops, spices, sourvenir shops and numerous restaurants with home cooking, cafe bars lining the harbour. Every evening the daily boats (Gulets) return to the harbour, some offering food and drink aboard with moonlight cruises.
In Fethiye you don't need a car, but the owner has two bicycles which are available to use. The town itself is flat and its a delight cycling along the wide promenade to visit the many cafe bars, enjoy a drink or two and watch life go by. You can easily catch a dolmus (local mini bus) to various beaches or bays nearby or why not take the water bus (half hour service) to nearby Calis Beach. There are also several free local swimming pools which can be visited for the price of a drink. Food is available and a friendly welcome.
If you do want to hire a car, this is easily arranged by the owners. The many small villages just outside Fethiye provide a delightful insight into Turkish village life and an opportunity to see many hand crafts such as weaving at first hand.
On Tuesdays there is a huge local market which continues all year. Also every Friday the villagers bring in their seasonal fruit and freshly grown vegetables straight from the soil or tree. In season, peaches, radishes, tomatoes are the size of a very large orange! When buying household items or clothes, you should also barter (its not obligatory but great fun and expected!) There are many cafes in the market where you can enjoy fruit juices, gozleme (traditional Turkish pancake with fillings of your choice) doner, durum or sandwiches. Further market days are Sundays in Calis area & Gocek resort.
Surrounding Fethiye are mountains, pine forests, waterfulls, turquoise seas and delightful beaches and bays. Mild wet winters, hot and balmy summers make it a delightful area to visit in any season.
