The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

Called the Turquoise coast, due to the stunning blue seas, the area is surrounded by the forested Taurus mountains, with many super beaches. Mild winters and hot dry summers make it a delightful region to visit in any season.

Activities include walking, fishing, swimming, snorkelling, diving, paragliding, sailing, cycling, horse riding, rafting, trekking, tennis and an aqua park (in season) are all available. There is golf at Dalaman about 45 minutes away.

From Fethiye and Calis, you can visit many destinations of interest: Gocek, Kalkan, Kas, Olu Deniz, Butterfly Valley, Uzumlu, Dalyan. The nearby ancient sites include Letoon, Xanthos, Patara, Pinara and Kaya village.

At Dalyan (Iztuzu) there's a wonderful long sandy beach, also at Patara - both of these are famous for the loggerhead turtles and are protected beaches. Dalyon is on a river with daily boat trips to the beach, Kaunos, mud baths and Koycegiz lake.

Inland, travelling through the small villages around the area you will find how traditional life continues.By private car hire or via the wonderfully reliable and economic bus system, you can explore both inland or along the coast to the famous Olu Deniz lagoon or further to Kas and Kalkan. If you prefer to explore by boat take the boat trips available from the harbour calling at places unreachable by road You can also take a day trip to the Greek island of Rhodes.

Fethiye

Fethiye, a market town of approximately 70,000 residents is located on the old city of Telmossos. There are numerous archeological sites include Lycian rock tombs, sarcophagus, theatre and castle ruins, documenting its ancient history.

Fethiye is situated between Gocek, with its stylish harbour and shops, and Olu Deniz with its stunning beach and blue lagoon (probably the most photographed beach in the whole of Turkey) Fethiye harbour and Paspatur Old City are where the life centres with cafes, restaurants, attractive carpet shops, clothes boutiques, leather shops, jewellery, spices and souvenir shops. Throughout Fethiye are hundreds of restaurants or eating places to suit every pocket and palate. Between Akarca and Fethiye, along the beautiful promenade walk, are a variety of restaurants, open all day, serving breakfast lunch, dinner, also drinks and snacks. There are also numerous places to just sit relax and enjoy the shore and views, or for more energetic activity, free adult, as well as child, play areas with exercise machines

Although surrounded by stunning mountains, Fethiye itself is flat and easy to walk or cycle around - you don't need a car. There are dolmus (minibuses) everywhere, taking you everywhere; to various villages or local beaches. There is also a regular bus service provided by Fethiye Council to Calis.

Fethiye has many daily boats which during the tourist season of April to October visit 5 of the 12 islands (called the 12 island tour) The cost is approximately £10-15 per person from 10.30am until 6pm and includes a wonderful lunch. Teas and all drinks are also served on the boats Calis also has similar boat tours, on smaller boats

"Excellent location for some R&R"

Not wanting to stay in the main tourist areas, this was an excellent, quiet, base for exploring both nearby Fethiye and the hinterland. You easily walk into town in 30-40 minutes following the seaside promenade, or hop on one of the many many dolmus buses which take you there for a euro in 10 minutes (with all your shopping). The apartment was clean and had everything we needed. The pool & garden are great! The owner was very helpful and provided us with some very good tips. The supermarket is 10 minutes away, but rather stock up on excellent fruit & veg at both Fethiye and Calis market. Want to eat fish? Buy it at the fish market in Fethiye (buy wild, not cultured!) and have it cooked where the locals eat: a non-descript "Turkish" place in the veg market a little further on. Cheap and delicious. And go explore, take a bus inland for next to nothing and let the landscape wash over you. Unbeatable.
