The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
The area is rich in ancient history and Fethiye, previously known as Telmessos (the land of lights) was an important city in the Lycian region. Even today there is still evidence of its historical past with beautiful rock tombs and large mountain caves clearly visible as you cross the bay from Calis Beach using the local water taxis. Fethiye is one of Turkey's best loved areas and has become especially popular due to its ideal location and climate. In 2007 Fethiye-Öludeniz was voted best tourism centre in the world by both the Times and Guardian newspapers. The hospitality of the local people together with the area's outstanding natural beauty means that many people revist this area year after year.
Calis has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and offers a variety of easily accessible shops, bars and restaurants. The area is well known as a protected refuge for sea turtles (Caretta caretta) and other wildlife such as dolphin and blue crabs. The beachfront is notable for some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. We recommend that you wander down to one of the many seafront restaurants in the early evening to view the sun settings behind the mountains whilst enjoying local mezes and a cool refreshing drink. What a fabulous way to end a long, hot day in the sun.
Visit Fethiye in the cooler evenings and stroll around the old town before taking a short climb to see the rock tombs or a visit to the ancient amphitheatre. Visit the array of modern shops selling top quality clothing and gifts at great prices and stroll along the new promenade and harbour area. Don’t miss out on a boat trip around the local islands which offers amazing value for money and normally includes several swim stops, fishing, snorkelling, and an onboard BBQ.
If you enjoy bartering then visit one of the local markets in Calis (Sunday) or Fethiye (Tuesday) where you can wander through a maze of fresh fruit and vegetables, herbs, spices, gifts, and clothing. If you like to explore further afield then trips can be arranged through local tour companies or use one of the Dolmus buses to explore independently. Visit Ölüdeniz (Blue Lagoon), one of the most photographed beaches in the world and an area of natural beauty with clear, crystal waters and high mountains ideal for swimming, water sports, and paragliding. If you get a chance visit Saklikent gorge - a cool refuge and favourite picnic spot on hot summer days - or Dalyan mud baths - a maze of channels which are easily explored by boat - and local restaurants specialising in delicious fresh fish. The ghost town of Kaya is a fascinating abandoned village that was once a wealthy Greek town of 5,000 people. The Greeks abandoned Kaya in 1922 as part of the general population exchange between Greece and Turkey at the end of the war between the two countries. Kaya today is an eerie ghost town lit up at night to illustrate several hundred ancient houses and two well-preserved churches.
