The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

Because of the exquisite blue waters of the Western Mediterranean, this famous coastline was named the Turquoise Coastline. It offers sunny skies, warm translucent seas and hidden treasures of rock-cut Lycian tombs, ruined Byzantine monasteries, ancient Roman baths and towering Greek amphitheaters but to name a few. It is rich in history and no territory was so closely connected with Greece in mythology as Lycia. There are around 20 major Lycian sites still remaining today. To mention but a few, Xanthos (one of the 6 principal cities of Lycia), Letoon (the sacred cult centre of Lycia which include 3 side-by-side temples to Leto, Artemis and Apollo), Kekova-Simena (an area with beautiful scenery and underwater ruins) and Tlos (best known for its fortress-topped acropolis, with its rock-cut tomb-covered sides and its 360 degree panoramic views.
The Fethiye / Calis Beach area
Calis Beach stretches for 4km with a variety of hotels, bars and first class restaurants on the beach front within strolling distance, offering fine cuisine and stunning views. The Turquoise Coast offers everything and boasts extraordinary sunsets, and is best viewed on the beach whilst sipping sundowners. It caters for those needing to relax to those who enjoy hiking, birdwatching, visiting archaelogical sites, swimming, paragliding, snorkling/scuba diving and sailing. No visit is complete without the 12-island tour where one can sail around each island in the bay, with stops for lunch and drinks.
Fethiye has a beautiful harbour providing water taxis (to and from Calis Beach), and is the centre for a wide range of attractively priced excursions, including boat trips to islands on traditional Gullets, motor launches or fishing boats. There is a water taxi through a nature reserve into Fethiye harbour that runs every 30 minutes every day right up to midnight. Another very reliable source of transport is the local Dolmus minibus which also runs regularly until midnight (almost to your doostep) and is a cheap and fun way to explore this lovely area. The Dolmus always has the destination written on the front and they'll stop for you if there is any way of squeezing you in. Most useful after many hours on your feet sightseeing or evenings in the bar! Should you fancy some wind in your hair, you can opt for bicycles, four wheelers or dune buggies for hire.
The Saklikent Gorge (Hidden City) is a must see. It is the second largest (20km long) gorge in Europe (the longest and deepest gorge in Turkey).Tucked within the gorge, locals have set up small restaurants with seating areas on wooden platforms suspended just above rushing spring waters. This is a great place to relax, sitting upon Turkish rugs and cushions with a beer under shady trees. River tubing is very popular here. You can also enjoy a day paddling downstream through the beautiful nature of the Xanthos Valley. The kids can enjoy a lovely day out at Sultans Aquacity, a waterslide mecca for all children which is a mere 2 to 3 minutes stroll.
5km from Calis, the Fethiye Museum can be found, consisting of two exhibition halls. The Archaeology Hall features ceramic works and statues, one being a Young Girl's Statue with a Dove and a trilingual stele. The Ethnography Hall consists of hand woven works and silver jewellery. In the open exhibition, one can find big stone works of art, tombs and the Izraza Monument.
Olu Deniz is approximately 15 minutes from Calis Beach, with pristine white sand and amazingly blue water it is one of the finest beaches in the world. Olu Deniz takes its name from the beautiful blue lagoon located a few hundred yards from the main town. The warm clear waters of the Blue Lagoon are ideal for swimming and snorkelling and there are shaded areas suitable for picnicking dotted all around the lagoon. A visit into the main town of Olu Deniz is recommended should one be interested in bargain hunting, for there are many bargain shops found here. If you seek a thrill, then take a trip to the top of Baba Dag for a tandem paraglide jump down to the beach and Blue Lagoon. It will be a trip to remember!

The apartment is in a perfect position by the Chalis beach, so you can just pop out, and be in the sea within minutes. A wealth of cafes and bars stretch along the promenade (which has no motor... more |

We have just returned from the Saros apartments and had a fantastic time, the views from the balcony were amazing and we spent a lot of time on there watching the world go by. The apartment was of a hight standard with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The sunset boat trip is to be recommended as is the trip to Saklikent Gorge although when booking beware the water rafting costs an extra 30lire and you get drenched so take spare clothes. The only downside to the holiday was the beach was not the cleanest it's a stone beach so you need water shoes to get in the sea and there were lots of cigarette ends everywhere. Response: Thank you for your valuable feedback. We're glad you found the apartment to a high standard and are happy that you had a comfortable stay and look forward to welcoming you again next September. It's unfortunate that there were some cigarette butts lying around as they do clean the beach every morning without fail. You certainly never see any litter. It's worth mentioning that there are two beach clubs nearby that are sandy and there's a new surf club at the new housing development, about ten minutes away, that's also sandy. |
