The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Fethiye is an unspoilt resort with street markets, a busy bazaar area, lively water front harbour (daily links to the Island of Rhodes, Greece) and a large marina. As Turkey is not in the EU the standard of living is a lot cheaper than the UK, eating out is also very good value for money.
There is a huge market held on Tuesday and Saturday with endless food stalls along with clothes, leather goods, handbags, carpets, shoes, herbs & spices, Turkish delight, local lace and trinkets. Haggling with the stall holders is a must. This is the best and cheapest place to buy fruit, vegetables, spices, cheese etc.
There is a central area where you can buy something to eat and drink, the chicken doner is fantastic as are the local pancakes. For fish lovers go to the nearby fish market where you can buy fresh fish daily. Restaurants around the market will cook it for you. There are two good butchers close to the fish market and a few fruit and vegetable stalls that are open daily.
The local area is a haven for history lovers and will provide you with endless days out exploring. Places to visit include the Lycian tombs at Tlos and Telmessos, dating back to the 4th century BC, Dalyan mud baths, the Old Greek ghost town at Kayakoyu and turtle beaches here and at Patara.
Olu Deniz is acknowledged to be one of the most beautiful lagoons in the Mediterranean with its steep, heavily forested mountains sweeping down to the turquoise sea.Olu Deniz is a famous paragliding centre and the more adventurous can paraglide (with a qualified pilot) from near the top of Babadag Mountain down to the beach.
There are a variety of other excursions to choose from which will please everybody... from the thrill seekers to the lazy day lovers. Local reasonably priced boat trips around the beautiful Fethiye bay are well worth the trip and usually include lunch in the price. Fethiye beach has various water sports to offer suitable for everyone from beginners to experienced water babies.
The Fethiye / Calis area
Calis Beach is the main beach area for the bustling lively town of Fethiye. It stretches for over 4kms with a promenade flanked by the beach on one side and numerous Hotels, restaurants and cafe/bars on the other.
The beach ranges from sand at the Fethiye end to pebbles at the opposite end. Here is the place to relax, swim or snorkel in warm seas, sunbathe sensibly or relax in a cafe drinking in the casual relaxed atmosphere. The locals and waiters are very friendly and are always ready with a smile and welcome.
Shops, bars and restaurants are all within walking distance of the apartment. You can also book all your trips and excursions from Calis. There is plenty to do including horse riding, jeep safaris, quad bikes, water sports, boat trips... you won't be bored !
If you miss the Fethiye market Calis has its own one on a Sunday. The smells of the fresh fruit and veg will soon have you salivating but if you can't wait there are plenty of cafes where you can sit and enjoy a kebab or pancake before carrying on with your bartering and shopping.
One thing you must plan to do at the beginning of your holiday is a Turkish Bath. There are plenty of Hamams to choose from in Calis or Fethiye. This is an ideal way to de-stress after travelling and will get your mind and body ready for your holiday.
The Dolmus (bus) runs frequently during the day until late at night and is cheap to use, during the day you can hop on a Dolmus right outside the apartment. Spend the day in Fethiye, have some time relaxing round the pool then head up to the Calis restaurants for a meal and a nightcap while you watch the fabulous sunsets.
