About the home
The Olive Grove Villa and Retreat Centre is the largest villa in the picturesque and peaceful village of Uzumlu in Eastern Anatolia, considered to be the most beautiful region of Turkey. Situated within 2000 square metres of olive groves, the spacious and comfortable semi-circular building nestles in the pine forest foothills of the Taurus Mountains and is skirted by the dramatic Turquoise Coast, popularly known as the Turkish Riviera to the west. This is the perfect location for people who want to combine the tranquillity of a rural and breathtaking setting with easy access to the convenience of modern towns like Fethiye.
The Villa: Available to rent all year round, the Olive Grove Villa is designed to ensure it is bathed in sunlight from sunrise to sunset and features 3 ensuite double bedrooms that can easily sleep up to 9 people, each with its own sweeping balcony.
In addition to the bedrooms, there is a very large, open-planned living space with the living room running into a dining room and huge kitchen looking out on to the heart shaped swimming pool.
The villa is incredibly versatile – not only can it be used as holiday accommodation for couples and other groups, it is also suitable for running retreats and workshops. It is particularly suited to outdoor activity holidays – the region has some of the best walking in Turkey and you can sail, ride horses, dive, paraglide and river raft too.
Extras: A housekeeper and other staff can be provided if necessary but this will incur extra charges. If you just want to laze by the pool hardly lifting a finger, you can phone through an order of provisions to the shop and these will be delivered. Food from the local restaurants can also be delivered too.

The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

Beaches: The big attraction for visitors to this part of Turkey is of course the Turquoise Coast. The combination of balmy weather, warm sea, hundreds of kilometres of unbroken shoreline along the Aegean and Mediterranean waters, makes this stretch of Turkey’s coastline a popular destination for both national and international visitors - there are no less than 6 fine beaches within easy driving distance of Uzumlu, each offering it’s own particular attractions.
Beaches:
1. Gocek – Distinguished by it’s remarkable marina, Gocek is the gateway to a small selection of wonderful unspoilt island beaches. These are accessible by water-taxi from the harbour or by Island Cruise.?Various sea-going vessels are available for private hire depending on your budget and taste.
2. Katranci – Situated in a beautiful cove this beach can be found on the highway between Fethiye and Mugla. If you are looking for one of the quieter beaches then this is the one for you. It is also features a camping site for holidaymakers (mainly Turkish).
3. Oludeniz – Is in a valley surrounded by pine covered mountains on 3 sides. The beach itself is a part pebbles and part sand and is probably the most photographed beach in Turkey. Olu Deniz has become something of a destination for paragliding enthusiasts from all over the world. You can even take a tandem paraglide with an experienced pilot from the top of Barbuda mountain and landing on the beach.
4. Calis - Calis beach extends to the Kariy River as is known as the place to go for a package holiday. The sparkling sea opening up into the outer bay makes for spectacular sunsets throughout summer.
5. Patara – Is the longest sandy beach in Europe, running to staggering 11 miles of coast. It is thought that the village was founded by Patarus, a son of Apollo. Patara is also the birthplace of Saint Nicholas (aka Santa Claus), the 4th century Byzantine bishop, who eventually became known as Santa Claus. You may want to combine your visit to the beach with a stop off at the Saklikent Gorge which runs to 28 km.
Things to do further afield: Arching around a bay, the bustling market town of Fethiye with its beautiful sandy beaches (Calis Beach is renowned for its sunsets), bars and tea gardens along the waterfront is only 20 minutes drive away by car or local bus. Fethiye is great for souvenir shopping – you can buy authentic Turkish carpets and other hand crafted goods such as silver jewellery and leather bags in the colourful, cobbled streets of the bazaar district. Be prepared to barter! The town has a beautiful harbour where you can catch a boat (lunch is provided) to go island hopping and swimming in the warm, crystal clear sea between twelve islands. Or you can simply go for a steamy soak and relaxing massage in the town’s oldest Turkish baths.
If you crave history and culture, you should visit Amynthas Rock Tomb, one of the most splendid examples of Lycian civilisation, which was built into the side of the mountain above the town. If you look closely enough, you’ll spot “Amynthas: son of Hermapias” carved into one of the pillars in 4th Century BC script. If that all seems far to active, you could take an excursion a bit further out of town to go and relax by the shores of the internationally famous Blue Lagoon.
The Fethiye / Yesil Uzumlu area
Uzumlu means “grape place” and when you see the vineyards on the surrounding mountainsides you understand why it was so called. Tucked beneath the ancient Roman and Lycian city at Kadiyanda, Uzumlu has managed to retain the natural charm of a traditional Turkish village. Kadiyanda, which is more than 2500 years old, offers spectacular views across historical sites of the Xanthos Valley and opportunities to explore the ruins of an amphitheatre and stadium.
Legend has it that Alexander the Great, on a mission to invade Anatolia in winter 334-333 BC, entered into Telmessos harbour with his fleet. The fleet’s commander, Nekros, asked permission of King Antipatrides of Telmessos for musicians and slaves to enter the city. On getting the permission, the disguised soldiers, with guns hidden in flute boxes captured the acropolis while a feast was being held that night.
After being taken over in 1284 by Menteseogullari, Telmessos was named Megri, meaning 'far city', and was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire in 1424. In 1934, the city was renamed as Fethiye in honor of Fethi Bey, a martyr pilot of the War Of Independence.
Out and about in Uzumlu: The pretty and authentic Ottoman village of Uzumlu is a short ten minutes walk away from the villa and the local people couldn’t be more friendly. Here, you’ll find weavers creating the intricate patterns of the local ‘dastar’ cotton and silk fabric and small shops selling olive oil, fresh bread and locally made wine. Organic fruit and vegetables, fish, spices and other fresh produce are available during market day on Fridays. There are also a few small restaurants and a wine bar. The plains, hills and mountain streams around the villa itself are a walker’s paradise. The villa is also the ideal base for visiting the ancient Lycian cities scattered in ruins around the hilltops surrounding the villa.
