The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

he promenade is lined with restaurants and bars from where you can sit and enjoy the beautiful sunsets.

In Calis there is a water park, plenty of shops, some water sports and a Sunday market. There are plenty of agencies organising tourist trips within the resort. One is at a loss for words to describe the beauty of Fethiye. If you are incurably addicted to exploring new horizons and are a lover of nature, this is the destination for you… What is it that makes these shores so delightfully indented with innumerable coves and the unbelievable beauty of nature. What makes it so alluring? Perhaps it is a bit of everything, who knows?

Fethiye

Fethiye is a traditional market town set around a beautiful natural harbour. It is a large centre for scuba diving. Boats depart from here for day trips around the stunning coastline. The most popular boat trip is the twelve islands boat trip, which is an extremely relaxing way to spend the day, touring the beautiful coves and islands of the Gulf of Fethiye, with breaks for lunch and swimming. Life here continues all year around, and recently, many British nationals have chosen to make this relaxed area their home. There are a number of hotels in the town itself, which mostly attract older couples, who enjoy the traditional lifestyle and also like the fact that it is flat and easy to get around. There is a greater variety of shops in the narrow streets of the bazaar area, Paspatour, offering more competitive prices than those in any of the resorts. This area is also lively in the evening with a multitude of Turkish bars and live music. There is no beach in Fethiye itself although there are hotels which have access to the sea for swimming. Once the site of Telmessos, all that remains from this ancient city, are the Lycian rock tombs which overlook the modern town, a couple of Lycian sarcophagi and a small Roman theatre.

Calis is located 2.5 miles north of Fethiye and is a laid-back resort with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. It is not a full-on party place with wall-to-wall nightclubs so if you are looking for wild nightlife, then this is not the place for you. However if you enjoy relaxing days with plenty of nice bars and restaurants to choose from, with easy access to Fethiye and the surrounding area.. then this is a great place to stay.

With an amazing 4 km stretch of beach, you can always find your own peaceful spot on Calis beach. There are plenty of watersports and activities on offer at the nearby Fethiye Surf Club. The beach promenade is a lovely place to stroll along and is lined with shops, travel agencies (offering many excursions), cafes, bars and restaurants offering both Turkish and International cuisine. The local market takes place on Sunday so you can see the locals selling their wares. There is even the Sultan's City waterpark in Calis which is great fun for all the family.

From Calis, you can take the dolmus (local bus) or the leisurely water taxi to Fethiye (don't forget your camera as the views from the water taxis are stunning). Fethiye is a lively working Turkish town so is a great place to see the locals going about their every day lives and offers many restaurants and good shopping around the Old Town bazaar and the impressive marina. The huge market takes place on Tuesday with more than 500 stalls ... definitely the place to barter for all your holiday bargains and a great place to buy fresh produce such as locally grown fruit and vegetables.

At the northern end of Fethiye bay is the harbour of Gocek. The village has grown around the extensive yacht marina and is a great place to visit and watch the rich at play! Just to the south of Fethiye is the popular resort of Olu Deniz with its stunning lagoon and beach... probably one of the worlds most photographed beauty spots. Adrenline junkies can paraglide from the top of Mount Babadag down onto the beach at Olu Deniz to enjoy the breath-taking scenary. Why not stop off en-route in the hills at Hisaronu or Ovacik for a bite to eat as it is generally cooler up here on hot days.

Other interesting places/ things to do in the area to visit include:

- Climbing up to the Lycian Rock Tombs in Fethiye

- Exploring the Ancient ghost village of Kayakoy

- A boat trip around the 12 Islands or to Butterfly Valley

- A jeep safari to Patara Beach

- A day return on the fast ferry from Fethiye - Rhodes, Greece so you can experience 2 countries in 1 holiday!

More excursions which can be organised from Calis include visiting the:

- Mud baths at Dalyan and the ruins of Caunos

- Beautiful gorge of Saklikent and the ruins of Tlos

- Maginificent ancient city and wonders of Ephesus

- The amazing white calcium terraces and mineral waters at Pamukkale
