About the home
Dar Drissi is a traditional house in the heart of the ancient Fez Medina in Morocco. The Fez (or Fes) medina is a walled city founded more than a millennium ago and permanently occupied since then. It offers a rare and fascinating insight into the history and culture of the Moroccan people.
Traditional houses are called "Dars" or "Riads". Riads have a garden in their centre. Our dar has a marble floored courtyard with fountain. Dars and riads have an open atrium (or “halqa”) in their centre, with most windows opening into this atrium. This dar is at least 250 years old. It has recently been extensively and painstakingly restored using traditional crafts to complement its original features, many of which survive intact.
It has been converted into a guest house with modern en-suite facilities discreetly installed to preserve its original ambience.
There are 4 bedrooms of differing sizes. The 2 smaller rooms both have a double bed. The larger rooms have 3 and 4 single beds respectively. In each of these rooms 2 of the beds can be joined to make a double bed.
There is no air-conditioning but there are fans when it is hot and radiators when it is cold. The halqa can be covered during inclement weather. Our staff will do this for you.
There are 2 small kitchens, 1 on the ground floor and 1 on the roof terrace. The roof terrace is split level with plenty of shelter from the sun as well as open areas for dedicated sun-worshippers! It has impressive views over the Medina and of the Mid Altas mountains beyond.
Rooms may be rented individually or the whole house can be rented for your exclusive use. Our website has more details.
The accommodation package includes bed and breakfast, a room cleaning service and the assured attention of our staff throughout your stay. We will also take care of you from the point of your arrival at the airport or train station until your eventual return. There are no resident staff but they visit daily and are on call whenever you need assistance.
We will gladly assist you with arranging sightseeing, restaurants or excursions to nearby tourist attractions.

Further details indoors:
The largest room - the Grand Salon - has 4 beds, 2 that can be joined as a double. It has very high ceilings, 3 large shuttered stain glass windows and a large en suite bathroom with both a bath tub and a shower. It also has its own private balcony over the courtyard.
The Courtyard Salon on the ground floor has 2 magnificent large wooden doors with smaller doors built in. It has 3 beds, 2 of which can be joined. At one end is a shower room. At the other is a toilet and wash basin.
The other two rooms are small double bedded rooms accessed from the stairs:
The Lower bedroom is larger and has a bathroom annexe. It has restricted headroom in the bathroom and doorways.
The Upper bedroom has good headroom but is very limited on floor space and storage space.
Further details outdoors:
The roof terrace has two levels. The upper level gives great views over the Medina and Mid Altas mountains. It has a shaded area with comfortable seating and low tables. The lower level has large open spaces and a tent with comfortable seating that provides shelter from both sun and rain. There is a kitchen that is accessible from the lower terrace. It is small but has basic food preparation facilities including a sink, a 2-ring electric hob, a kettle and a fridge. There is a room next to it that can be used as a dining area. It also is used as a drying and ironing facility. The roof terrace is a great place to experience the atmosphere of the Medina in luxurious comfort.
Further details
We do not consider that the house is suitable for small children or anyone with restricted mobility. This is due to stairs and steps and (in the case of small children) a fountain with a pool of water 30 cms deep.
The house is a no-smoking area but you may smoke on the roof terrace.
Conditions
The hire of the whole house is subject to a minimum period of THREE DAYS. Shorter rentals are possible but only by renting all 4 rooms individually, which will cost approximately 40% more than than the whole house day rate.
We do not ask for a deposit. All payments should be made during your stay at Dar Drissi. We can only accept cash payments. This can be in any currency or mixture of currencies. We cannot accept coins and may refuse notes that are damaged or defaced because our bank will not accept them from us.
The Fes region

Fes is located in the northern half of Morocco. It is inland close to the northern foothills of the Mid Altas Mountains. It has been the ancient capital city of Morocco at three separate points in its history.
It was founded in the late 8th Century by Fatima, the daughter of the prophet Muhammad.
It was a place of scholars with its Karouine University, built in the mid 9th Century.
Its intact walls have constrained its expansion and have contributed to the preservation of its way of life, offering a fascinating insight into the history and culture of the Moroccan people.
The Fes City / Fes Medina area
Traditional crafts are still widely practiced in the Medina. Goods are transported through its narrow streets on donkeys, mules and handcarts much as they were hundreds of years ago.
In the 20th century, under French rule, a new city of Fes was established centered 5 kilometers from the Medina. That is now a large and thriving city that is worth a visit in its own right.
But the Medina retains its unique character and old ways and operates largely independently of its big neighbour.
