Enquire nowThe Fes region
Fes or Fez (Arabic: ???? Fas, French: Fès) is the second largest city of Morocco, following Casablanca, with a population of approximately 1 million (2010). It is the capital of the Fès-Boulemane region.
Fes, the former capital, is one of the country's four "imperial cities," the others being Rabat, Marrakech and Meknes. It comprises three distinct parts, Fes el Bali (the old, walled city), Fes-Jdid (new Fes, home of the Mellah) and the Ville Nouvelle (the French-created, newest section of Fes).
THE KING: Morocco is a kingdom. The Moroccan Alaouite royal family is the second oldest royal family in the world and has the longest reigning monarchy. The Moroccan monarchy can be traced back to the 700s. The current king is Mohamed VI. The king’s wife, Princess Lalla Salma, is from Fez. King Mohamed VI is also the religious head of Morocco.
TOURISM & THE ECONOMY: The livelihood of most medina families depends directly or indirectly on tourism. The bottom line is that whether you are buying a pair of babouches (Moroccan slippers), candles or a carpet the locals are benefitting. Unemployment in the medina is extremely high. I have met families where there is only one person working in a family of 11... So yes, while you may find yourself buying more than you intended, you will not only be helping to support the local craftsmen and their families, but also the survival of the craft itself.
CRAFTS: The area around DAR SIENNA has fabulous workshops. Fez is the craft capital of Morocco and prices here are lower than in Marrakesh and elsewhere. Many workshops are upstairs and some are tiny little workshops at ground level. Take time to watch. Round the corner from the house is one of the last makers of Fezzes. Leatherwork, cloth, beautifully decorated saddles for fantasias, handbags, sandals, pottery, jewellery, carpets, rugs, blankets….not to forget beautiful brass lanterns and lampshades etc etc. My favourite place is PLACE SEFFARINE, the Metalworkers Square, very close to DAR SIENNA, where you can watch metalsmiths at work, while sitting at the café. A visit to the SIDI MOUSSA tannery is a must…. As well as the potteries at Ain Nokhbi.
Fes el Bali is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its medina, the larger of the two medinas of Fes, is believed to be the world's largest contiguous car-free urban area. The University of Al-Karaouine, founded in AD 859, is the oldest continuously functioning university in the world. It has been called the "Mecca of the West" and the "Athens of Africa".
The Fes City / Fes Medina area
Absolutely all the major sites and sights are right near Dar Sienna. The best way to explore is perhaps take a half day official guide (arranged by us) and then go and explore yourselves. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes. Dar Sienna is ideally located in the heart of the medina, right near all the fabulous souks (markets). This is shopper's paradise. Fez medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest urban car-free zone in the world!
Step back in time.... this is a medieval city, that is still fully functioning.... explore the wonderful craft shops and savour the sights, colours and sounds of this extraordinary city. Fez is the craft capital of Morocco and these are some of the craft workshops you can see: woodwork with sculpture and painting on wood, wrought iron, engraved copper, gold and silver work, ceramics, silk weaving and embroidery.
We will provide you with a small map. The town of Fez is divided into three parts : Fez el Jedid (semi-old Fez) and Fez el Bali, old Fez where Dar Sienna is located, which make up the medina, and La Ville Nouvelle built by the French on a grid system.
ACTIVITIES: Henna painting with our neighbour. Calligraphy, cookery, yoga, belly-dancing, Derrija and Arabic all at Café Clock
Sunday sunset concerts at Café Clock 6.30pm. Check out the cultural agenda at Café Clock: 7 Derb el Magan, Talaa Kebira, Fez Medina

There is regular train service along the line that runs from Marrakesh-Casablanca-Rabat-Fez and return. From Marrakech, the trip is about 7 hours and costs approximately 200 dirhams second-class or 300 dirhams for first class. The trip from Casablanca takes about 4 hours and costs 100-150 dirhams. From Rabat it takes about three and a half hours and costs 75-105 dirhams.
By Car
Fez is about 4 hours' drive by car from Casablanca. The stretch of toll highway from Rabat to Fez is in superb condition.
Traveling by grand taxi (inter-city taxi), though more expensive than trains, is viable for tourists- a ride from Fez to Casablanca costs approximately 1200 dirhams (120 euros), which is not bad if you are sharing the cost among 3 or 4 passengers. Note that grand taxi fares are regulated and it is worth checking the official rates with the tourist board, as some drivers or hotels will quote inflated prices.
Within Fez, use petits taxis (local taxis) rarely cost more that 15-20 dirhams. However, the medina of Fes el-Bali is only accessible from a few points by car. Bab Boujeloud and nearby Place Batha are popular dropoff points, as is Place R'cif; for parking there is spaces at Ain Zleten on the northeast edge of the medina. Our meeting point for guests is either at the airport, the train station or the airport. BAB R'CIF is the closest access point.
By Bus
The old bus terminal ("gare routiere") is just outside the old city on the north side, near the Ain Zleten entrance to the medina. Grands taxis (inter-city taxis) can also be obtained here. The CTM terminal ("gare CTM") is in the Atlas neighborhood of the ville nouvelle, 7 km from the medina, but has taxi stands nearby.

This riad is a great value and the staff go out of their way to make you comfortable. The beds are extremely comfortable and the view from the roof is unbeatable. I especially recommend the second story room with the large exterior bathroom - it is like a private hamam. The owners seem to love Fes, and do all they can to help their guests have a great experience. Each room has a binder with a map of the old city, a list of Arabic words and some information on local culture. A staff member picked us up from the train with a clearly marked sign. The breakfast was great. I look forward to staying here again. I especially recommend this to couples - or friends who don't mind sharing a bed. |
