Home description

The Borgo Antico was born after the careful restoration of a very ancient and rural stone house (17th century) located in a peaceful and panoramic place, on the greens hills of Umbria. This is a typical umbrian structure, with its mellow field stone walls , original antiques full restructured, rare "pianelle" and the great and comfortabe atmosphere of a welcoming villa...

This place is also the essence of tranquility ; quiet hillsides to look upon, mountains in the background, a pasture of sheep in the distance, an occasional car or a tractor is heard. But mostly the sound that reaches this hilltop is the soft wind, the farmers at their work, and the birds, especially in the morning. That's why we say that if you want to enjoy the true umbrian spirit staying far away from the touristic and busy places, you should consider a vacation here!

The house was completely restored and converted for today’s use it retains the original atmosphere of a country farm house: large sized rooms, a large living/dining room with its ancient and big fireplace .This carefully furnished room or "taverna" ( with comfortable hand made chairs and sofa bed, a table for 12 and a collection of Italian country antiques and decorations that are pure Umbrian) is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine before dinner and a coffee in the morning. On the first floor there are 3 large sized bedrooms with its ancient and hand painted comfortably beds, charming antiques and the warm of an unforgettable atmosphere.

The Umbria region

Umbria is primarily mountains and hills, streams and valleys, with terraced vineyards, orchards and miles of olive groves. Umbrian olive oil is considered by many to be Italy’s best, and the wines of Orvieto are legendary. Outside of Piemonte, Umbria is the only region where truffles are found in abundance: five varieties grow wild in the woods. Lake Trasimeno, the largest in central Italy, provides a moderating influence on much of the climate.

The Umbrian landscape is often cloaked in a silver blue haze, giving it a soft, soothing, and almost mystical quality. Western monasticism began in the Umbrian hills, and abbeys, monasteries and convents are found throughout the region. Dominating the town and a magnet for thousands of tourists is the impressive Basilica of St Francis, with treasured frescoes by Giotto, Cimabue, Lorenzetti and Martini. But even at its most crowded, Assisi’s narrow, winding lanes and medieval houses of pink stone and flowering window boxes retain a feeling of peace.

In the spring wildflowers transform the rolling Umbrian countryside into a rainbow of colour, but still one’s eye is drawn upward, to the tops of the surrounding hills, to the walled towns perched above. Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of the region, these fortified medieval hill towns are rich in art, history and architecture, and many are relatively untouched by tourism. Gubbio, Spello, Todi, Spoleto, Deruta, Orvieto — all are unique and worthy of a visit. Perugia, the capital, is one of Italy’s best preserved towns, with a strong artistic and cultural tradition. The fresco painters Perugino and Pinturicchio lived here, and their works are part of a comprehensive collection of Umbrian art displayed in the 13th century Palazzo dei Priori, or town hall, considered one of the finest secular buildings in Italy. The frescoes of Pietro Vannucci, Perugia’s most important Renaissance painter, can be seen on the walls of the Collegio del Cambio, built in 1450. Perugia was founded by the Etruscans, who built the city walls and the imposing arched main gate of the city. It is also the site of the annual Umbria Jazz Festival, and home to the famous Perugina chocolates and Buitoni pasta.

Olive oil flavors most of the dishes of this hilly region, and ventresca and guanciale, cured meats, also lend their distinctive taste. Black truffles from Norcia and Spoleto feature in specialties like spaghetti alla nursina and trota al tartufo, trout with truffles. Meat is usually grilled, roasted, or baked; try the roasted lamb, agnello arrosto, traditional at Easter. Porchetta, a roast suckling pig flavored with garlic, rosemary and other herbs, is a signature dish, and game is prepared many ways: squab with olives, pheasant with grapes, and pigeons with tomatoes, olives, vinegar, juniper berries, and prosciutto. Norcia is renowned for its cured meats (norcino means pork butcher in Italian, the master of salami and cured meats), and the entire region offers stupendous cheeses, including caciotta, fresh and salted ricotta, and Pecorino. Desserts include cicerchiata, a wreath-shaped cake made of deep fried dough, candied fruit, nuts and honey, and served at Carnevale and Christmas; pinocatta, a pine nut-studded cookie; and tisichelle, anise-flavored macaroons. Among the outstanding wines of Umbria are Orvieto, Torgiano, Monetefalco Sagrantino, Montefalco Rosso, Colli Altotibertini, Colli Perugini, and Colli del Trasimeno.

Ferentillo area

Nature, Sport, free time:
Here you can find a variety of sporting activities: from those more exciting like rafting, hydrospeed, canyoning at the wonderful Marmore's Falls, to those of a more relaxing nature, like country rambling and trekking, guided tours, bicycling, horse-riding, birdwatching, nature visits and much more.

If you don't know how nice it can be, please try to get " asparagous" during the sunny spring and mushrooms from the start of the summer until december! The area is very rich in the famous and excellent "porcino", but here you can find also black truffles and very good pork products produced from the "Norcini".
The house is perfectly located to explore and visit the region. In fact, the main road called "flaminia" that connects the south with the north of Umbria is only 2,5 kms far.
It wil be very easy to visit cities such as Spoleto, Assisi, Perugia or the most unexplored south from here!
The Valnerina area that is considered the most green place ( we think it is also the best area to visit ) of Umbria is only 7 kms far and represents the best way to enjoy the medieval spirit of this region. This large area called "Valnerina" is rich in medieval villages, ruins, castles, monasteries and old churces sourrounded by an intact and green nature. The medieval age is still there with its precious art !
From the spring to the late autumn you can enjoy this ancient and mystical spirit through a variety of "sagre", historical or religious events, many kinds of festivals and cooking events. This is also another good way to enjoy the famous and fragrant umbrian cuisine and the local products such as truffles, hand made pasta, lentils, fresh mushrooms, the famous olive oil and wine, an incredible choice of meats produced here following the old tradition....

ACTIVITIES near the house:
horse riding, walking, trekking, mountain bike, bike, fishing, rock climbing, rafting, rural / countryside retreats, lakeside, restaurants.
In about 10 minutes you can reach the modern Terni town or Spoleto city where you can find every type of market and amenities.

How to get there

You can get the Umbria region with very cheap flights provided by Ryan Air , Easy jet and many other low cost companies.
The closest airport is Perugia ( many Ryan air flights every week of the year), another close airport is Roma fiumicino and Roma Ciampino. From Perugia you need less than 1 hour by car to reach the property and from Fiumicino or Ciampino you need about 1h 30 ( it depends to the traffic).

Car hire available in every mentioned airport. If you need help or a good advice about where and how to rent a car for a good value, feel free to contact us and we will provide the best service for your needs.
We strongly recommend a car. Umbria is very small, but so rich in places to visit that is very hard to explore and get in touch with this region without a car.
You can also rent a car in Terni or Spoleto city. We can pick up you in one of these two rail stations and arrange the transfer from/to the house. We can provide also guided tours through the region and central Italy and if you like it, we can also offer you a private car with a driver.
For any additional information contact us and we will send you detailed information about it.

A beautiful stone house. We really enjoyed our stay. The village is tiny but very friendly. Despite being furnished with antiques the house was family friendly and was a relaxing place to stay with 3 small children. The owner was very helpful and speaks good English. Lots to see and do in the surrounding area and a garden area with great fews in which to relax.
