About the home
" The Runcini guesthouse is situated in an old medieval village, the Gabbio that overbears the Valnerina and the underlying community of Ferentillo. The unit is at the beginning of this old village and the road that runs through it is part of its structure. The rooms are lodged internally of these completely reconstructed stone houses, maintaining the warmth and the history of the various elements with whom they were built and that have characterized them over the years.
In the house there is a space available including a distinctive well-equipped kitchen and places were one can comfortably relax while watching a movie. Each room has a private bathroom.
The “stone” itself has generated the name and the colour that the rooms are decorated in. The space is equipped with characteristic items that give our guests the possibility to feel at home. The area around the house has a nice terrace with a lawn and olives where one can enjoy the environment and immerse into nature. "

The Umbria region

History, culture, gastronomy and folklore, uncontaminated nature and art towns in a spectacular tourist itinerary. These are all the ingredients of well being that Umbria can offer thanks to its beauties and treasures. As a matter of fact this region is capable of welcoming and enchanting its visitors for 365 days a year.
The playbill is extremely rich and combines the greatest and consolidated manifestations of the national panorama with surprises, inventions and novelties in a hymn to fantasy and creativity. Towns, boroughs, villages and museums boast a striking artistic, monumental, archaeological patrimony in a natural scenario of rare beauty.
Hotel accommodation is wide with tourist structures of any kind, including hotels, holiday farms and restaurants exalting the oenological and gastronomic tradition of this region, its typical products, its savours, its dishes and wines. Folklore is also relevant and old rites and customs are rediscovered on occasion of any single festivity. A big stage to be always in the front line!
The Ferentillo / Gabbio area
Historical traces
The pre-Romanesque village of Gabbio (from the Celtic “Anobio”, meaning “place of encounter”, is only a few minutes away from Ferentillo (Terni) in Valnerina, in the green Umbria and is situated in a predominant panoramic position in a particularly mild climate.
Due to it’s peculiar position the village was of great importance until the XI century. For the whole period from XI century until the XIII century Gabbio was a place of transit and control of merchandises from and to Spoleto. Together with the asserted power of the nearby abbey of San Pietro in Valle, Gabbio grew in it’s military importance of which the remains of the strengthened walls with loopholes, courts, arches and the ruins of the towers, testimony.
The fortified centre that surrounds the higher part of the fraction might go back to the XI century, in conjunction with the remains of the Saracen even though some believe they are pre- Roman and Roman findings positioned upstream of the populated area in the immediate nearness of the recently opened climbing cliffs. The internal alleys, crossed by winding narrow streets formed by stone staircases, are overtopped by a series of arcs in a row until the end where the community well is situated, the church and the doorway towards the other fractions of Nicciano and Loreto. The street in the middle of the forest conducts directly towards the territory of Spoleto, to the stronghold of the barons Ancaini and the namesake village, the nearby Ancaiano.
The great tower, once rather strong and imposing, inserted into the degrading walls of towards the valley, was developed as a check point as well as for the ditch as for the path of the valley; more beneath it is possible to see a dovecote tower from the XV century built on the rocks.
The following buildings that one encounters at the entrance of the village were developed after the half of the XIV century and follow the flow of the internal road. On the left of the houses, after an arc, one can see the ancient community oven, derived from the remains of the square bastion embellished by two half-moon windows. The surrounded wall finishes with a door, once square of shape, placed to the extreme end of a pass. The village is crossed by one main road only that connects to short deviations and alleys that run to the furthest houses. Two doors confine the true and real fortress.
The walk of San Francesco passes through Gabbio from the part of La Verna (Abruzzo) all the way until Poggio Bustone (Rieti) through Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio, an important curiosity for the comeback of the paths and the tourist- religious itineraries of Valnerina.

The owner is a perfect host - very friendly, funny, open-minded, serves fresh cakes every day and is a keen traveller herself. The setting is of the house is awesome, offering climbing possibilities behind the garden and down in the valley (20 mins by foot). The owner has also topos of the climbing area. |

the houses are located in a lovely old former deserted mountain village with a stunning view over the valley. the rooms are well renovated, cozy end equipped with modern WC, shower ...and ours had a nice kitchen with more than all necessary tools too. in 2 min walking distance you have the hot spot of climbing, in 15 min driving distance you find hundreds of other excellent routes...there is a italian guide book giving clear topos of all spots. climbers paradise... we did long hiking tours throgh the stunning mountains and medival cities... a lovely spot on earth, we do travel a lot, but this house (castle/village) have been the best stay ever...the hosts are super friendly and helpful... |
Guestbook for Guesthouse Runcini
Voto globale dell'affittuario : 5/5

+ Wunderschöne Zimmer, zauberhafte Landschaft, sehr nette Gastgeber. Wir haben uns so gut erholt und hätten noch Tage länger bleiben können. In der Gegend gibt es viel anzuschauen und es gibt keinen Massentourismus. Ich kann es jedem nur empfehlen! Beautiful rooms, magnificent scenery, very friendly hosts. We were able to relax completely and would have liked to stay much longer. There is so much to see in the area and it isn't swamped by tourists. I recommend this hotel wholeheartedly!
- Die Straße hoch ist steinig und man muss sehr langsam im ersten Gang fahren - aber wir haben uns nach dem ersten Tag schon daran gewöhnt. The road uphill is rocky and you have to drive very slowly in 1st gear - but we got used to it after the first day.
