The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Var region
The Var department is situated west of its famous neighbour Côte d’Azur. With its beautiful landscape of both mountains and sea and its sunny Mediterranean weather it is a popular holiday destination all year round.
Along its 300-km long coast, you will find some stylish seaside resorts like glitzy St Tropez and Ste Maxime, as well as some smaller but equally beautiful and charming resorts like Bandol or Le Lavandou. The beautiful Iles d'Or (Porquerolles, Ile du Levant and Pors Cros) are also well worth a visit and can be reached by boat from La Tour Fondue near Hyères.
Inland, you will find delightful and unspoilt hilltop villages, green oak forests and further to the north, the breathtaking Gorges du Verdon with its many water sports and activities. A visit to the Abbaye du Tholonet while the monks sing their evensong can be a most relaxing break from the bustling beaches. The Var region is particularly well known for its Rosé wine and a good fresh Bandol is well worth a meal in a seafront restaurant. The local Gastronomy is bursting with fresh herbs and full provencal flavours.
Fayence / Seillans area
Seillans ('most beautiful villages of Provence') is 35 kilometres west of Grasse.
Seillans is a small "village perché" (perched hill-top village) overlooking the plain between the southern Alps and the Esterel, which borders the sea between Cannes and Saint-Raphaël. The commune of Seillans covers the town and its rural catchment area.
Seillans has a steeply-inclined medieval centre, accessible only on foot and a number of small squares and old buildings. It is the western-most of a line of such towns and villages (including Montauroux, Callian, Tourrettes and Fayence) that face south and attract tourists and each offer a variety of cultural pursuits. They are most striking when viewed from the plain below. Other local attractions include the nearby Lac St. Cassien.
Seillans is a popular destination for visitors, lured by the charming houses and scenery combined with the sunny climate and proximity to the Mediterranean. Seillans features a castle and delightful 13th century church at its summit. Nearby are rustic chapels, vineyards, forests and olive groves.
Seillans has an annual Pottery Market and many concerts and occasional events throughout the year, as well as the annual Musique-Cordiale "Festival Musiques en Liberté", a fortnight when the church, the village hall and outdoor venues resound to a variety of high quality classical, choral and jazz music from international artists each August, when the area is at its most popular.
