The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Var region
The Cote d'Azur, in the very south east of France, consists of the narrow coastal strip from St. Tropez in the Var département, to Menton in the Alpes-Maritime département on the Italian border. It boasts 3 of the top glamour spots in the world. Monaco, Cannes & St. Tropez. In between these giants lie many smaller but none-the-less beautiful towns like Antibes, Fréjus & Menton & Juan-les-Pins. Immediately behind the narrow coastal belt lies the jewel that is Provence. The good life.
Here, life proceeds at a slower pace. Acres of Cotes de Provence vineyards & olive groves surround medieval perched villages. Everything testifying to the passion of the Provenceaux to the good life. A pastis in the evening shade. A glass of wine with your "daube de sanglier" or "bouillabasise" or maybe a fresh "Salade Nicoise" knowing they are all produced locally and fresh, lend proof to the its reputation.
The stunning scenery takes one's breath away. The Gorges de Verdon, the Esterel coast line, or just one of the many ancient unspoilt villages, impossibly perched on the side of a cliff, give Provence a deserved reputation of being one of the very top "most beautiful" regions in the world.
Fayence / Seillans area
Seillans, one of only three "Plus Beaux Villages de la France" in the region, is a spectacular example of a Provencal perched village. Steeped in history, its narrow, cobblestone rues seem untouched by the passing of centuries. In summer its "places" alternate with vegetable markets, artisans markets, even pop and classical music concerts. The neighbouring villages of Fayence, Tourrettes, Callian & Montauroux, all similar in style, have their own offerings, all in frendly competion.
The Cotes de Provence "Route du Vin" is 10 minutes by car. Here one can enjoy the many "dégoustations" on offer. The spectacular Gorges de Verdon with its impossibly turqoise water, just one hour. The beautiful Lac St. Cassien, possibly Europe's top fresh water angling spots, just 20 minutes by car. Tennis in Fayence, horse riding, cycling - all on the door step. We have literally hundreds of kilometeres of walks taking in lakes, mountain, forests - a veritable heaven for the "randonneur". But maybe the ultimate vision epitomising Provence, the vast lavender fields with their rows of deep colour, can be found near the Gorges de Verdon. Magic!
For the golfer, the 5 star Four Seasons luxury resort is just 7 kms away, with literally dozens of courses with an hour and a half. Cannes, with its famous Croisette, Film Festival and beaches, just 45 mins by car. Monaco, with its Grand Prix in May to the east, and St. Tropez to the South, just an hour and a half. The Nice carnival in February and the Menton Orange and Lemon festival in January are further colourful spectaculars. And last, but not least, the Mimosa Forest around Tanneron, which has to be seen to be believed. In short, there is always something to see & do in this fabulously rich region.
