The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Var region
Situated right at the door to the Var department, (2 kms. from route D562 driving from Grasse (19kms) to Draguignan (34 kms), 25 kms from Saint Raphael and Frejus, 25 kms from Cannes, 65 kms from Nice airport and 2 kms from Callian) and not far from the only crossing of the Siagne river. Montauroux is proud to boast about its 280 days of annual sunshine, a picturesque village nestled to the east of the Var. The village is one of five similar communities atop five adjacent hills known as les 'cinq villages perches'. The village was the scene of a battle between Henri VI and the Duc de Savoie in 1592 and many points in the village evoke its past. The village is built on the site of an old fortress and is endowed with much of historical interest such as the remnants of a roman aqueduct, a stone bridge which Hannibal used to take his army across the Siagne, a medieval church and chapels as well as houses from the 17th and 18th century. Chapel St Bartholomy is a legacy to the village from Christian Dior who chose Montauroux for his summer residence at Chateau de la Colle Noire which can be seen on the village outskirts.
Daily shopping requirements are more than adequately catered for in the village square either from local bakers and butchers, the mini-market or the weekly Tuesday market brimming with local produce. Its Honey, Olives and Olive oil are a 'must buys'! Village life centres around the square where essential matters of the day are discussed at leisure over a coffee, a pastis or a game of 'boules' or 'petanque'.
Many businesses including banks are closed on Mondays but there are numerous ATMs available for cash withdrawals.

Fayence area
Lac de St. Cassien
This beautiful picturesque lake is about 7 kms long north-south, with an east-west section another 3 kms long. With its southern tip adjacent to the auto route just 12 kms west of Cannes, Lac de St. Cassien is easy to get to while remaining natural and unspoiled. The lake is bordered almost completely by forested hills and the shoreline is undeveloped leaving its beauty for all to enjoy.
There is ample parking and easy access to the shore with beaches for swimming, picnic tables, boating, sailboard and canoe rental. The majority of the shoreline, however, is isolated and accessible only (if at all) by small trails through the scrub oak and juniper to tiny coves and clear spots suitable for Picnicking and swimming.
Fishing
The lake contains huge carp as well as pike and other predator fish. Carp fishing is open year-round while the season for other fish should be verified at Chez Pierre's or one of the other cafes along the lake. To help maintain the sport of fishing you should release anything that you catch.
Sports
Boat, canoe and sailboard rental is available along the eastern shore of the lower lake (conveniently beside the road) and northwestern end of the Pont de Pre Claou bridge that crosses the lake. The rental boats are row boats and boats with small electric motors. Private motor boats are not allowed on the lake; no water skiing is permitted.
Hiking
(Maps: IGN 3543 est (1:25,000); Didier Richard # 26 (1:50,000).
Hiking trails go completely around the lake although they follow roads for part of the journey. To the east of the lake, the Bois de Callian goes up over hills towards the village of Tanneron, where oak forests merge into many mimosa forests. To the west, the hills and forests are wilder and steeper.
Golf
There are several beautiful golf courses in the local area:
Domaine de Terre Blanche. If the Côte d'Azur is the soul of the Domaine de Terre Blanche, the golf-course is its heart. No other site, in fact, can offer golfing amenities on a par with the ones you'll find here: two 18-hole courses, a golf academy, a floodlit practice range with covered positions. Swings and puts are thus on the residents' daily program. Villas and courses merge into a single backcloth for a life-style wholly dedicated to the owner's pleasure. The fairways of the two18-hole courses thus pay their visit to the five little hamlets on the Domaine. Check for more information at www.terre-blanche.com
Golf de L'Esterel
Par 71 and 5825 metres - Esterel Golf Club is just over a mile from the beaches of Saint-Raphael, in the heart of the majestic pine Massif de l'Esterel. This course has great views as it runs down to the Mediterranean. Tel: +33 (0) 494526830 Fax: +33 (0) 494526831
For more golf courses in the region, please visit: www.golfinfrance.f9.co.uk/levar.htm
Gorges du Verdon
The dramatic Gorges du Verdon are only 45 minutes away and is well worth a visit. Grasse, the famous centre of perfume production is nearby and perfume producers welcome visitors to tour their factories. Florisan, the chocolate manufacturer is not far from Grasse and visitors are welcome to watch the manufacturing process and sample the product. The charming towns of Vence and St Paul de Vence, Antibes, St Raphael, St Tropez are within an easy drive from Montauroux. Cannes, about 30 minutes drive from Montauroux - is well worth visiting at any time of the year, but you will find many of the world’s rich and famous there in May during the Cannes Film Festival. Provence has a rich architectural and historical heritage and many art galleries, museums and interesting buildings to be found in the region’s towns and villages within a short drive from Montauroux. For those who are interested in sailing, the ports along the Mediterranean are filled with beautiful craft. A single track railway runs from Nice to Digne and travellers can stop at any of the little stations on the train’s scenic journey through the mountains for sightseeing or walking and catching the train on its return. Festivals, exhibitions, antique fairs and concerts, feasts, fetes and street markets are held throughout the year in this part of Provence. A series of six concerts by international string quartets are held annually in October, in local churches in and around Montauroux. To end the day what can be more pleasant than absorbing the enchanting ambiance at one of the lovely Provencal restaurants enjoying a delightful meal with a glass of wine on a warm evening in the South of France.
The Grand Canyon du Verdon, also called the Gorges du Verdon, is a spectacular canyon that forms a border between the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and the Var. Up to 700m deep, the 21kms long canyon varies in width between 6 meters and 100 meters at the bottom and 200 meters to 1500 meters at its rim.
Activities include:
• White water sports: rafting, canoing, kayaking. • Water sports: sailing, water skiing, fishing. • Aerial sports: para-gliding, free flight gliding.
Also possible are climbing, hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. Gorges du Verdon is located about a 45 minute drive from Montauroux. Please visit www.beyond.fr/sites/verdon for more information.
Skiing
During the winter season there are several opportunities for skiing within less than 2 hours drive: Isola 2000 - located about 2 hours drive from the area at 2000 meters altitude offers skiing from December to April. Greolieres Les Neiges – 1.5 hours drive offers skiing from 1700 – 1400 meters altitude and is usually good from Christmas to March. The resort is good for learners and can be excellent after a big snow fall, but it is only a relatively small ski resort but there are snow making canons.
Weather
The weather during the summer months is warm and dry with balmy evenings (there are occasional downpours but they are infrequent and normally brief). Spring and autumn offer mainly warm and sunny days with cool nights with occasional rain. Away from the coast the weather in the winter is slightly cooler during the day with quite cold nights and more rain but is very often sunny.
