The Northern France / Nord-Pas-de-Calais region
Nord Pas de Calais Many who enter this area of France often drive through but rarely explore. Those of us who have spent a little time here have discovered a much slower pace of life, excellent restaurants and many places of interest to visit. Find out what it is like to drive in 50’s Britain. The roads here are rarely busy and you can find yourself wondering, “Where’s all the traffic gone?” The area is ideal for cycling, walking, fishing, golfing and photographic holidays; or if you prefer just chilling out with the occasional excursion. Just 45 minutes from Calais and 20 minutes south of St. Omer, at Thiembronne we can offer you a choice of two modern well-equipped 3-bedroom cottages in a beautiful country setting. Relax and enjoy the countryside and take the odd excursion. For example you might visit the museum at the historical site of Agincourt (or as it is called in France; Azincourt) or visit the underground city that could accommodate about 3,000 people.

PLACES OF INTEREST Chocolate Making La Chocolaterie de Beussent can be found in the delightful rural setting of the Vallée de la Course, located 23 Km from Le Touquet, 10 Km from Montreuil sur Mer and 17 Km from Desvres. The chocolate factory can make a satisfying and interesting part of your group’s trip to France with towns and cities such as Calais, Boulogne, Montreuil, St. Omer and Desvres all within easy reach. After entering the website, click on the link for Beussent then click on the link at the bottom of the page ‘UK flag’ flag to get an English translation. Agincourt The Battle of Agincourt was fought on 25 October 1415 (Saint Crispin's Day), in northern France as part of the Hundred Years' War. The combatants were the English army of King Henry V and that of Charles VI of France. The battle is notable for the use of the English longbow, which helped the English compensate for their inferior numbers. Today in Agincourt there is a museum dedicated to the battle - Centre Historique Médiéval that offers a very good overview of the battle, the weapons used and the causes and consequences of the clash at Agincourt. The Blockhouse of Eperlecques is the largest bunker in Northern France and is classified as a historical building. Built within four months, this monumental factory was designed to manufacture 84.8 tons of liquid oxygen per day and to launch a maximum of 36 rockets a day. With a range of 4,500 km, the A10 rocket would have been able to target America. La Coupole After Allied bombing raids had crippled the Blockhous at Epelecques, the Germans turned their attentions to La Coupole. The menacing concrete dome that emerges from trees hides not only a rocket-launching base but also an underground slave labour camp ‘home’ to thousands of Russian and Polish prisoners. ACTIVITIES There are horse riding places all over Pas de Calais including ones close to Thiémbronne and Sainte Cécile. We also have bikes available at Thiémbronne to tour the area. Golf There are many excellent golf courses in the region of Pas-de-Calais. The link below shows you where they are with links to each so you can view prices and make enquiries. Bagatelle This is a theme park and zoo at Merlimont, which is between Le Touquet and Berck. It is about 45 minutes from Thiémbronne and 25 minutes from Sainte Cécile. It is aimed at children (and adults) over about 11/12 years of age. Dennlys Park This theme park at Dennebroeucq is aimed at young children and is about 15 minutes drive away from Thiembronne and 45 minutes from Sainte Cécile Aqualud Ideal of all ages particularly families is the water-park at Le Touquet, which is called Aqualud. Le Touquet also has an airport, golf course, horse-racing track, music festivals, water sports, casinos, great night life, chic shops and bars. It attracts 7 million visitors every year. It also has miles of sandy beaches to enjoy. Chocolate Making La chocolaterie de Beussent can be found in the delightful rural setting of the Vallée de la Course, located 23 Km from Le Touquet, 10 Km from Montreuil sur Mer and 17 Km from Desvres. After entering the website (www.choco-france.com) click on the link for Beussent then click on the link above and at the bottom of the page ‘UK flag’ to get an English translation. Sainte Cécile There is an adventure playground close to the cottage at Sainte Cécile that includes climbing apparatus, biking and other activities and is ideal for children of 7/8 and above. The link is to Camiérs, which includes Sainte Cécile but is in French.
TOWNS in Pas de Calais St. Omer Only 40km from Calais, Saint-Omer is such a lovely town you could spend an entire weekend in it and be perfectly satisfied. It rises out of the surrounding sea of market gardens, which flourish on the drained Audomarois marshlands. Le Touquet Le Touquet has an airport, golf course, water park, horse-racing track, music festivals, water sports, casinos, great night life, chic shops and bars. It attract 7 million visitors every year. It also has miles of sandy beaches to enjoy. Boulogne Boulogne is France's biggest fishing port and was once Napoleon's base for invading England. As well as exploring the churches and Roman walls of the beautiful medieval quarter, don't miss seeing the Nausicaa Centre's 3,000 different species of sea life. Boulogne is still an attractive seaside resort, with Nausicaa, the world-class sea-life centre; sandy beaches and good facilities for children (recognised as a "KID Station"). Calais If you've crossed by ferry or tunnel, this is your first sight of "abroad". It's amazing how different a place can be when it's so close. In Calais you can enjoy the cultural heritage of traditional French restaurants. Despite the town having been flattened in two 20th century wars, you can also find a lot of surviving glimpses into its fascinating past - if you know where to look. Montreuil-sur-mer Montreuil-sur-Mer always gives visitors a warm welcome. Don't miss the market on Saturdays and the Brocante held every 14th July (Bastille Day). This 17th-century fortification was also the inspiration for Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables", which is commemorated with a "son et lumière" each summer. Hesdin Hesdin is a 16th-century fortified town on the banks of the river Canche. It is surrounded by forests and borders a beautiful region called "Les Sept Vallées". Hesdin Town Hall's belfry and ornate balcony look over the main square which hosts a busy market every Thursday morning. The Town Hall entrance still bears the Spanish crest. Desvres (Town of potters) If you are interested in pottery, like collecting decorted ceramics, and enjoy watching skilled craftspeople at work - Desvres is the place to come! Desvres has been famous for centuries for the manufacture of decorated ceramics. Today you can still visit its potteries, see craftspeople at work, and choose bargains in the factory shops. Desvres is a lively market town, deep in the countryside inland from Boulogne. There is a big weekly market, and good restaurants - many serving regional specialities.
