Woodpecker Cottage
About the home
This charming semi-detached character cottage is loved by all who stay in her. Fitted with every modern convenience, from hairdryers and hugely comfortable beds to Sky Sports and wireless broadband, Woodpecker Cottage is situated on the borders of three of England’s most beautiful counties: Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire - yet within an easy 'commute' to London. With wooden floors and good rugs, a kitchen so well equipped that the most enthusiastic chef will be satisfied, and lovely homely touches from paintings to toys and DVDs, a sewing box and shoe cleaning kit, Woodpecker is the perfect place to spend peaceful days or from which to explore the English home counties AND England's great capital city - with the South Coast beaches an hour in the other direction, and fabulous theme parks (Legoland, Chessington) within 45 minutes drive. Woodpecker Cottage is within 20 minutes' drive of Guildford, Aldershot etc. for people temporarily employed in the area. A magical enclosed garden and a sunken 'waterbabies' bathroom (like a small swimming pool to little children) make Woodpecker a fabulous venue for young families.

Further details indoors:
The charming split-level living room (with high quality, comfortable furniture, TV, video/DVD & sound system) leads, through oak framed French doors, onto the back terrace, with barbecue, dining out facilities and enclosed gardens beyond. The kitchen is well fitted with hand-built old-pine units (made from reclaimed materials), with fridge, freezer, dishwasher, bread-maker and every modern convenience - and with a green-glass-panelled door leading through to a neat utility room. Eight people can be seated at the dining room table (and 12 at outside dining tables), and we provide a high chair (plus two cots and baby listening and other baby items). Pretty pine chests in the sitting area and the charming pine period sideboard in the dining area contain toys and games, for inside and out, summer ad winter; and there is a great collection of DVDs for adults and children. A paddling pool is available in the garden. Also on the ground floor is a delightful WC with hand-painted tiles and Victorian pine panelling. Next to it is a delightful study overlooking the secluded front garden, with BT Wireless/ADSL Broadband. This study can turn into a comfortable fifth bedroom when a fold-down bed from upstairs is brought down.
Upstairs, on the first floor, are two smaller and one larger bedroom, together with a WC and the fantastic 'Roman bath' which is like an indoor swimming pool for small children, and a wonderful shower/bath for adults. The two smaller bedrooms contain high quality single beds. Underneath each of these is another pull-out single bed, with a proper mattress (John Lewis' best!) which can be put up to a proper bed height. The double room has a King Sized double bed. Each bedroom has a charming colour theme, original paintings on the walls, high quality reading lamps, excellent bedlinen and towels, and the best quality duvets and pillows. The bathrooms, like all the other rooms, are kept immaculately clean, with soap, shower/bath foam and shampoo provided.
On the top floor, you find another bathroom/WC and the main bedroom - a lovely attic double room, airy and light, containing another King Sized double bed - as well as the laundry area (washing machine, dryer, iron and ironing board). Hairdryers are provided in both the double bedrooms.
Woodpecker is situated on a hill, and the views from all the bedrooms are stunning - looking across dense woodland, behind which the sun sets spectacularly every night. It is impossible to believe, gazing at this landscape, that you are within an hour of Central London . . .
Further details outdoors:
There is parking for three cars beside the cottage. Woodpecker Cottage backs onto fields and fronts onto the most delightful woods, filled with blue-bells in the spring. These are private woods available to the small number of cottages and houses in Green Lane, and are filled with wildlife (dear, rabbits, badgers, owls). Walks down Green Lane from the front door include one past a field that usually contains llamas; another past a sheep-breeder, who lets children hold his spring lambs; another (half an hour through the woods) to the shops, post-office and pub in Beacon Hill Village. You can also walk 20 minutes down to the other end Green Lane, through a dramatic valley, to the village of Churt with its village shop, antique shops, and the famous Crossways Public House.
We provide a wealth of material about the house and locality, in folders, maps and booklets in the study. And our wonderful housekeeper, Elizabeth Finneran, who lives at the other end of Green Lane, is on hand to answer any questions and deal instantly with any problems.
The back garden is fully enclosed and utterly safe for children and small animals. The lawns lead straight down from the back terrace, where you can sit with a drink (in comfortable chairs) and watch the children play. There are hidden treasures in the garden, little hideouts, and raspberries, greengages and wild strawberries to be picked at the bottom of the garden. The next door neighbours keep chickens and run a catering business, and can provide you with home-cooked meals if you don't feel like cooking your own. We keep bird-feeders in the back garden well stocked, and you will see a gorgeous collection of English birds, including the woodpeckers after which the cottage is named.

The South East England / Surrey region

The Home Counties provide a wealth of history and heritage to keep visitors wandering from county to county. Yet theme parks are under an hour away, and Goodwood racecourse and the Farnborough Airshow and the famous RHS Gardens at Wisley even closer. Or visit maritime Portsmouth or bustling Brighton . . . or pop up to London with its endless activities, museums, shopping, galleries, monuments and parks. The Cathedral cities of Winchester, Salisbury, Oxford are all within easy reach for day trips, as is the south coast.
For walks and wildlife just walk outside the front door and turn right! The South Downs are on your doorstep, as is the fascinating Devil's Punchbowl crater. Ramble on the South Downs or go hang gliding there, pootle down the waterways on barges,, visit the New Forest ponies in Hampshire, the Steam Railway at Liphook, the farms and local Rural Life Centre - or, closer to home, wander through the private and National Trust woods right outside your front door. See badgers, rabbits, hare and deer. Enjoy excellent opportunities to bird watch and canal boats for hire. Explore the remarkable Frensham Ponds (14th century man-made lakes) for boating and fishing, and for playing in the SAND that - astonishingly, surround them: yes, a beach in the middle of Surrey!.
The Farnham area
Woodpecker's village (Churt, between Farnham and Hazlemere) is perfectly situated to explore the three counties of Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire all of which have a wealth of things to do. If you are of a more active inclination why not try clay shooting, fishing, golf or even go-carting. Farnham and Haslemere (each 10-15 minutes' drive away) are Georgian market towns with commuter links to London (and Westminster Abbey for the 2011 Royal Wedding), Windsor Castle, Henley, Wimbledon - all these are under an hour away. And your choice of golf courses within 10 minutes' drive is stunning.

Guestbook for Woodpecker Cottage
‘Superb! Been a perfect week, quite the nicest place I have stayed for a very long time, and the kids have loved it too, watching the birds feeding . . . and the naughty black cat from next door! None of us want to leave tomorrow - I should have booked our entire stay at Woodpecker, but hey-ho, I will know better for next time.’
- Honeysett, December 2011

“We very much enjoyed staying at your house and we were much surprised of all the little details that you thought about for making the stay for your guests so enjoyable. One of the best things was the fresh bread baking for us when we arrived. Thankyou!’
- Schlachter, October-November 2011
‘Our family had a wonderful get-together at the cottage – young and old! The cottage absolutely suited our needs and we oldies were very pleased to be allocated the ‘pent-house’ as we called it – far enough away so as not to hear the baby waking up in the night to be fed! The garden was well used and we enjoyed it and all the little comforts you had thought of. The cottage is delightful. We have very happy memories and hope to return some day.’
- Easton/Evans, October, 2011
‘We’ve had a lovely week at Woodpeckers. A great base for exploring – we’ve been to Brighton, Salisbury, Stonehenge, Legoland, London. Off home now for a rest!’
