The Farnham area
Just an hour's drive from London. Farnham is an old English market town with narrow streets lined with some of the finest Georgian architecture in the South of England..
With a wealth of tempting opportunities for escaping to the countryside, shopping, eating out, sightseeing, visiting galleries or just sitting in gardens and flower filled yards soaking up the enchanting atmosphere.
Farnham Castle was built in 12th Century and has been an important meeting place for the Kings and Queens of England. The magnificent Castle overlooks the town. In 1138 Henry de Blois started building the Castle. It provided a fortification at the meeting of the highways and also hospitable accommodation for the Bishops of Winchester in frequent journey between his Cathedral and the capital.
Farnham Parish Church - St Andrew's Church is a late Norman/early English Church, however there are later additions. The most recent was in 1865 when the tower acquired its perpendicular top and the famous chimes.
Waverley Abbey was built in 1128 and is situated approximately 3 miles south of Farnham. Waverley Abbey was the foundation house in England of the new Cistercian order of the monks where manual work was encouraged and the liturgy simplified. The reliance of lay brothers to work the land proved very attractive to the uneducated by 1150 there were five other communities in England including Fountains Reivaux and Tintern Abbeys. Waverley continued to grow until late in the 14th century, providing shelter for pilgrims and an infirmary for the sick. Unfortunately, the Abbey was not well endowed and suppressed by Henry VIII in 1536. The Abbey’s ruins sit next to the river Wey and provide a picturesque picnic spot.
The award winning Museum of Farnham is situated in an attractive Grade 1 Georgian town house dating from 1718, known as Wilmer House. The Museum still has many of its original features and at the rear is a charming walled garden complimenting the building. The Museum also boasts a well stocked, studies library. f
The biggest outdoor country life collection in the south of England can be found at the Rural Life Centre, which is located a couple of miles from Farnham at Tilford. The museum is pleasantly situated over 10 acres of field, woodland and barns, which comprise a large number of implements and devices making over 150 years of farming. Many aspects of village and rural life are provided on site, which benefits from free parking, picnic areas, a shop and cafe. An additional attraction is the Old Kiln Light Railway, which is in action on Sundays and bank holidays, providing steam and diesel hauled rides for visitors.
The Maltings is a vibrant community arts centre, delivering a full and varied programme of events with something to cater for all tastes. The Farnham Maltings is a collection of buildings set in the heart of Farnham that provides a place in which people can imagine, create and discover. There is a thriving music scene including world music, blues, jazz, classical and folk. The monthly Stand Up Club attracts the best on the comedy circuit. Plus, there is theatre, contemporary, traditional and alternative dance and film, with a pick of contemporary and classic cinema. The Gallery and Artists Studios offer a changing programme of local artists and national touring exhibitions, whilst the specially programmed fairs throughout the year attract a good crowd.

Farnham was once home to many famous people including:-
WILLIAM COBBETT (1763 – 1835)
William Cobbett is arguably the most influential person Farnham has ever produced. Cobbett was born into a comparatively humble family, and as a small boy began his working life scaring the birds in the fields. He had little formal education but eventually became Member of Parliament for Oldham. Between these two occupations he was at various times; a professional soldier, farmer, publisher, author, journalist, pamphleteer business man and one of the greatest of all political agitators.
Generally remembered for his ‘Rural Rides’ and as the founder of ‘Hansard’, Cobbett, as a political journalist, was a thorn in the flesh of successive governments. For nearly forty years occupied a unique position of power using his brilliant pen to support the labouring poor by exposing corruption and dishonesty, earning himself the name, ‘The Poor Man’s Friend’.
FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE (1820 – 1910)
Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of nursing reform, had a connection with Farnham through her aunt, Ann, who had married George Nicholson the owner of Waverley Abbey House.
Whilst staying in this area, Florence is recorded as taking an interest in the welfare of the poor and became friendly with the Reverend Richard Garth who lived at Lowlands, later renamed Brightwells and subsequently the home of the Redgrave Theatre just off East Street.
One other tangible connection with Florence Nightingale is a travelling Holy Communion set which she presented to Farnham Hospital. It is inscribed 'For the use of the Nurses and Patients at Farnham Hospital from Florence Nightingale of the Crimea'. A further gift of a similar set and crucifix is also recorded.
Florence is reputed to have stayed at Waverley before leaving for Scutari in October 1854.
