The Marche / Abruzzo / Marche region
LE MARCHE The apartment is situated in Le Marche province which is virtually undiscovered by English travellers. It is rich in culture, charming hill towns and villages, fantastic food and friendly people. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty with designated park and nature areas. This area of the Adriatic coast is also famous for it's 180 kilometres of beaches. For example the well known sandy beach resorts of Rimini, Gabbicce Mare, Pesaro, Fano (5 minutes drive), Senigallia, and in the south of the region Monte Conero which has rocky coves and limestone cliffs. However there are lots of smaller beaches close at hand for you to try.
SLOW FOOD MOVEMENT This area is well-known for its fantastic food, and the 'slow food' movement and you will be spoilt for choice! There are many small towns and villages to explore inland and Gradara, a beautiful example of a hilltop fortress, is within a short drive. Enjoy a romantic al fresco evening meal at one of the small ristorante in Gradara. There are plenty of restauarants within a few minutes of the apartment if you dont want to explore too far.
CULTURE The Marche is an unspoilt yet cultured part of Italy. Pesaro, the region's capital and birth place of composer Giocchino Rossini is only 20 a minute drive from the apartment. You can visit the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro in August. There are lots of opera and classical music concerts in this area. Also nearby and within a bus ride is Urbino, a medieval hilltop university town well worth a visit. The Republic of San Marino, Venice and Verona are also near enough for a wonderful day trip. Assissi, the birth place of St Francis, is in this area. The Frassassi Caves are quite spectacular and worth a visit. THE TRUFFLE SEASON (OCT OT DEC) ATTRACTS MANY TOURISTS TO THE AREA. Le Marche region is famous for its prized white truffles. 'Tuber magnatum Pico' is one of the area's most sought-after treasures, and if you're here between 1 October and 31 December you can try it for yourself freshly dug from the ground. The centre for the truffle trade is Acqualagna in Pesaro-Urbino province, and handles around two-thirds of the entire Italian wholesale truffle business.
TEMPERATE WEATHER The Marches has a mild climate with sunny skies and bearable temperatures, especially in spring and early autumn. The busiest and hottest month is August when the Italians come to the coast to enjoy the beaches. You will enjoy a number of outdoor festivals and concerts organised during the peak periods, which ensure that tourists are treated to a wealth of local culture, sights and sounds.
DAY TRIPS Italy's transport links are well developed and it is possible to drive to Rome in approx 2 and a half hours. Venice,Verona and San Marino are also easily accessible for a day trip. Get the bus to Urbino, which is really worth a visit. Go into the Sibbillini mountains and foothills to enjoy nature at her best and admire the beautiful scenery. Take a car and explore some of the local towns and villages inland, where time has not spoilt tradition. Go to San Leo, San Costanzo, Barchi, Casteleone di Suaza, Acqualagna, St Angleo in Pontano.........
Fano / Metaurilia area
THE BEACH The apartment is a 5 MINUTE WALK FROM THE BEACH. You can nip back for lunch and a nap which is ideal for July and August, especially if you have young children and want to keep them out of the sun between 12 and 3pm. Can't bear to move from the beach? Of course you can have your lunch there, and you will find it is excellent value and quality and the owners of La Meta Beach are very friendly and helpful.
There are beaches all along this coast and you could visit a different one every day if you wished without travelling for more than 10 minutes. All of the local beaches are very friendly and are used by local families.
For young people interested in the more popular beach resorts try Rimini or Senigallia, where you will see all the local talent showing off their 'bella figura'.
EATING OUT OR IN YOU WILL FIND FANTASTIC FRESH LOCAL FOOD The local area boasts a number of excellent restaurants, the nearest being 2 minutes walk away! There are numerous restaurants within a five minute drive that won't disappoint you, and the area is well-known for fish. Marrotta has a wonderful fish restaurant 'il gatt' overlooking the beach which is popular with locals - always a good test! 'il Portico' is a 5 minute drive south and is highly recommended! 'Gambero Rosso' serves a wonderful shell fish rissotto - I could go on!! Being only a 10 minute drive along the SS16 from Fano and Senigallia the nearest towns, and 20 minutes from Pesaro, the apartment has easy access to even more excellent restaurants, shops and historic centres. Head to Fano Port and Beach area and you can't go wrong! There are also numerous local beach areas which have eating places in the summer and you really will be spoilt for choice in this area. There is a IperCoop hypermarket 10 minutes drive south which has all the food you could ever want including fresh fish, meat and pasta if you are cooking at home, and there is also a local shop within 5 minutes walk. There is a small shop on the right just over the bridge in Metaurilia which sells fresh local produce direct from the farm and local wine which is good and cheap.
ICECREAM You cannot fail to be impressed by the Italian ice-cream made on the premises by artisan producers. Go to Torette and sit in the Gelateria overlooking the beach and enjoy an icecream or Campari and soda whilst watching the sun sink in the sky. I defy you not to enjoy it!!
OUTDOOR LIFE The apartment is right on the edge of the countryside and this area is very popular with cyclists and walkers. The Sibbillini mountains and nature reserves are easily accessible by car. Get out the map and explore the local towns and villages by foot or bicycle.
CULTURE The area abounds with places to see. Urbino is a fantastic Medieval Hill Town which is well worth a visit and you can get a bus there if you wish. Gradara Castle (and war cemetery) is also on the doorstep. Opera lovers can visit the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro in August and take a look around his home, which is only 20 minutes drive along the coast in Pesaro old town. Inland there are numerous ancient hill towns and villages to explore, which retain their original character and way of life. Senigallia is a lovely old seaside resort. Cattolica is a lively seaside resort with large street markets every night in the summer months.
Fano was an important port and crossroads in Roman times and the attractive old centre retains its character with many fine Roman buildings. The Harbour (il Porto) attracts both locals and holiday-makers, head for the sea and harbour area for a stroll (passegiata) along the water front with the locals as per tradition or have dinner in one of the many restaurants here.
WATER PARKS AND OTHER AMUSEMENTS For families there are many water-parks in Riccione and Rimini beach areas for a fun day out. In August there are lots of free street entertainments in the seaside towns. Fire-eaters, jugglers, fireworks, music etc. 'Italy in Miniature' is another amusement park in the area.
TRUFFLE FAIRS FROM OCTOBER TO DECEMBER are a highlight of the region in the Autumn.

Guestbook for Residence La Lanterna
We thought the apartment was very nice - clean, light and airy and all in very nice condition. We realise that people are generally polite/friendly in Italy but the other residents all spoke to us and the man to the left of your apartment came up to 'borrow' some parsley one night and then rewarded us with a bag of tomatoes and some basil! Lorraine - Sept 09
Sharon, thanks for wonderful rest! We were in San Marino, Urbino - very beautiful places!! We had fine shopping!! All my friends envy me :-))) We will recommend your apartments to our friends! Olga - Aug 09
It's a gorgeous apartment and lovely quiet area, having a great stay. A Wynn-Jones July 09
We walked to the beach all but one day. My husband raved about the food at lunch there. The water was perfect for our 10 month old grandaughter. Thank you once again I will recomend your place without hesitation. Jill Frusciante - August 08
We went to il Portico restaurant twice, it was the best around, the staff were friendly and it was obviously popular with Italian families. We had a day in Urbino and Senigallia, all good. I will get in touch with you about next year. C Baker - August 2008
We had a wonderful time in Italy, and your apartment was perfect for our family. We enjoyed our time - and the kids especially going to the beach. We also appreciated all the personal contact that we had previously to our stay. I would recommend your apartment and the place - don't hesitate to forward contact or use any quotes! C Voss - July 2008
We had a lovely time staying in your apartment, thank you. The apartment was clean and had everything we needed. The countryside at the back was lovely for walks and much enjoyed by our dog. Perla - May 2008
Our week in your Italian flat was pretty near perfect - Feb 2008 - D Foulser
Just to let you know we had a wonderful time. The apartment is lovely. We found ourselves spending the days on Torette beach with the other holiday makers with their brightly coloured sun umbrellas and we ventured in Fano and Pesaro in the evening to eat and luckily there was a festival on Sunday night in Fano with parades, fire eating, etc. The food was delicious and the ice cream was awesome. I didn't hear another English voice till I got to the airport yesterday! - August 2007- L Allen
Thank you for your wonderful apartment. We truly enjoyed our stay! The children loved the beach. Sept 2007 T Bley
