The Marche / Abruzzo / Marche region

LE MARCHE
Le Marche province is virtually undiscovered by English travellers. It has charming hill towns and villages, fantastic food, miles of beaches and friendly people. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty and designated nature parks. For walkers the Sibbillini mountains and foothills offer the chance to enjoy nature at her best and admire the beautiful scenery. This area of the Adriatic coast is famous for it's 180 kilometres of beaches. For example the well known sandy beach resorts of Rimini, Gabbicce Mare, Pesaro, Fano (5 minutes drive), Senigallia (15 minutes away). Also the Conero beaches further south. There are also lots of more intimate beaches closer at hand for you to enjoy. Look out for cars parked along the roadside you can be sure a beach is nearby. Just follow the locals! Go and explore some of the nearby towns and villages inland, where local traditions remain intact.
SLOW FOOD MOVEMENT
Le Marche is well-known for its delicious food, and the 'slow food' movement. There are small towns and villages to explore, each with their own food specialities and traditional 'cucina povera'. In the summer you will find it difficult to choose from the many eating places around here. THE TRUFFLE SEASON (Oct to Dec) attracts many foodies to the area. Le Marche is famous for one of the area's most sought-after treasures - its prized white truffle, try it yourself freshly dug from the ground.
CULTURE
Le Marche is unspoilt and cultured. Pesaro, the region's capital and birth place of composer Giocchino Rossini is only 20 a minute drive from the apartment. You can visit the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro in August, and the composers home is now a museum. There are lots of opera and music concerts in this province. Within a bus ride is the UNESCO town of Urbino, a medieval hilltop university town well worth a visit.
WONDERFULLY SUNNY WEATHER
Le Marche has a mild climate and sunny skies. Temperatures in spring, early and late summer are warm without being unbearably hot (20 to 30 degrees). The busiest and hottest month is August when the Italians come to the coast to enjoy the beaches. You will enjoy a number of free outdoor festivals and concerts organised during the peak periods, which ensure that tourists are treated to a wealth of local culture, sights and sounds.
DAY TRIPS
You can drive to Rome in approx two and a half hours. Get the local bus to Urbino, which is really worth a visit. The Republic of San Marino, Venice and Verona are also near enough for day trips. Assissi, the birth place of St Francis, is in this area. The Frassassi Caves are quite spectacular and worth a visit. Go to San Leo, San Costanzo, Barchi, Casteleone di Suaza, Acqualagna, St Angleo in Pontano.........

The Fano / Metaurilia area
METAURILIA
A small community between the beach and farmland. Situated between Fano and Senigallia on the SS16, Metaurilia is a friendly place with a cafe bar, church, hairdresser, breadshop, pannini bar and a number of excellent local restaurants.
THE BEACH
You could visit a different beach every day of the week if you wished without travelling for more than 10 minutes. All of the local beaches are very friendly and are used by local families.
THE NEAREST BEACH IS A 5 MINUTE WALK. You can nip back for lunch and a nap which is ideal for July and August, especially if you have young children and want to keep them out of the sun between 12 and 3pm. Can't bear to move from the beach? Have your lunch there, it is excellent value and quality and the owners of 'La Meta' Beach are very friendly and helpful.
FANTASTIC FRESH LOCAL FOOD
The local area boasts a number of excellent restaurants, the nearest being 2 minutes walk away! In the summer there are numerous restaurants within a five minute drive which serve fantastic food, and the area is well-known for fish. Marrotta has a wonderful fish restaurant 'il gatt' overlooking the beach which is popular with locals - always a good test! 'il Portico' ristorante, a 5 minute drive south is always excellent for meat and fish and I recommended you try it! 'Gambero Rosso' serves a wonderful shell fish rissotto - I could go on!! It is a 10 minute drive along the SS16 to Fano, and 20 minutes from Senigallia and Pesaro for more excellent restaurants, shops and historic centres. Fano Port and Beach area is lively in the summer. There are numerous beach areas between Metaurilia and Pesaro which have eating places in the summer which means you really will be spoilt for choice. HIGH CLASS DINING WITHIN 2 MINUTE WALK at ALLA LANTERNA HOTEL
Eating at home? There is a IperCoop hypermarket 15 minutes drive south which has all the food you could ever want including fresh fish, meat and pasta, and there is also a local supermarket just over the bridge in Metaurilia, and a shop which sells fresh local produce direct from the farm and local good and cheap wines. You won't be able to resist the Italian ice-cream from the Gelateria which is made on the premises by artisan producers. Try Pesaro and sit and people watch or go to Torette and sit in the Gelateria overlooking the beach and enjoy an icecream or Campari and soda whilst watching the sun sink in the sky. I defy you not to enjoy it!!
AUTUMN/WINTER/SPRING
The apartment is right on the edge of the countryside making it very popular with cyclists and walkers. The Sibbillini mountains and nature reserves are easily accessible by car. Or get out the map and explore the local towns and villages by foot or bicycle.

Opera lovers can visit the ROSSINI OPERA FESTIVAL in Pesaro in August and take a look around his home, now a museaum which is only 20 minutes drive along the coast in Pesaro old town.
Inland there are numerous ancient hill towns and villages to explore, which retain their original character and way of life.
Fano was an important port and crossroads in Roman times has an attractive old centre with many fine Roman buildings. The Harbour (il Porto) attracts both locals and holiday-makers, head for the sea and harbour area for a stroll (passegiata) along the water front with the locals as per tradition or have dinner in one of the many restaurants here.

For families there are many water-parks in the Riccione (AQUAFAN) and Rimini beach areas for a fun day out.

This apartment is perfect for a holiday near the Adriatic sea. It is well equipped and in a quiet location. The nearest beach is lovely and the apartment is also near Fano, again with lovely beaches and shopping. Sharon (owner) always communicates quickly and has been flexible with arrival dates (we usually stay out of season) This was our fourth or fifth stay here. Highly recommended Response: Thank you for your lovely review. I have had lots of similar comments from other guests. They particularly like the convenient location and wonderful places to eat in the local area. I look forward to welcoming you back in 2012. |

We enjoyed a superb week in "La Lanterna", in which each of the family was able to get all they want from a holiday. The apartment is comfortable and well-equipped with everything we needed. The small, herb-filled garden at the front and the larger terrace to sit out and eat at the back were a bonus. With the local beaches just five minutes' walk away, some time was spent there each day, or at one of the many others along the coast (we particularly liked Sirolo on the Conero peninsula). We would recommend a car for the quick, easy access it gives to beautiful towns and countryside inland - Urbino is a must, but we also enjoyed the Gola del Furlo, Fossembrone, Corinaldo and the spectacular Frasassi caves. A proper Italian holiday experience, off the beaten track for most UK visitors, but one we thoroughly recommend. Response: It was good to hear that you all enjoyed the apartment and this part of Italy so much. It really is an unspoilt corner isn't it? I look forward to welcoming you again. |
Guestbook for Residence La Lanterna
You have furnished and decorated the apartment so nicely. What a super week we had. Having a car meant we went to loads of places but also walked down to the beach most days for a dip. Thank you again. Will certainly recommend your place to anyone going. July 2011
We thought the apartment was lovely, very well equipped and nice and close to the beach Aug 2010
We were very impressed with the facilities in the apartment. We found the apartment an excellent base for exploring the coast including Senigallia and down as far as Sirolo (maybe the best beach on the Adriatic?).
Also the effort to inform your guests, with detailed information about best beaches and restaurants etc. We tried Gambero Rosso....excellent, generous and friendly place, with much above average food. - Roy and Daniela July 2010
The children particularly enjoyed the visit. We spent a lot of time on the beach, which is beautiful, and walked into Torrette several times. Your neighbours are super. Would highly recommend your apartment to everyone. Thank you for having us.Catriona - April 2010
We thought the apartment was very nice - clean, light and airy and all in very nice condition. We realise that people are generally polite/friendly in Italy but the other residents all spoke to us and the man to the left of your apartment came up to 'borrow' some parsley one night and then rewarded us with a bag of tomatoes and some basil! Lorraine - Sept 09
Sharon, thanks for wonderful rest! We were in San Marino, Urbino - very beautiful places!! We had fine shopping!! All my friends envy me :-))) We will recommend your apartments to our friends! Olga - Aug 09
It's a gorgeous apartment and lovely quiet area, having a great stay. A Wynn-Jones July 09
We walked to the beach all but one day. My husband raved about the food at lunch there. The water was perfect for our 10 month old grandaughter. Thank you once again I will recomend your place without hesitation.

We had a wonderful time in Italy, and your apartment was perfect for our family. We enjoyed our time - and the kids especially going to the beach. We also appreciated all the personal contact that we had previously to our stay. I would recommend your apartment and the place - don't hesitate to forward contact or use any quotes!
