The Marche / Abruzzo / Marche region

SLOW FOOD MOVEMENT
This area is well-known for its fantastic food, and the 'slow food' movement and you will be spoilt for choice!
There are many small towns and villages to explore inland and Gradara, a beautiful example of a hilltop fortress, is within a short drive. Enjoy a romantic al fresco evening meal at one of the small ristoranti here. A passegiata (stroll) along the main street in the early evening is an Italian custom where locals don their best clothes to show off their 'bella figura'.

CULTURE
The Marche is an unspoilt yet cultured part of Italy. Pesaro, the region's capital and birth place of composer Giocchino Rossini is only 20 a minute drive from the apartment. You can visit the Rossini Opera Festival here in August. A well-known and flamboyant example of Early 20th century Liberty architecture stands near the sea front. Lots of opera and classical music concerts in this area. Also nearby and within a bus ride is Urbino, a medieval hilltop university town well worth a visit. The Republic of San Marino, Venice and Verona are also near enough for a day trip.

BEAUTIFUL BEACHES
With 180 kilometres of Adriatic coastline in The Marches there are lots of seaside towns to choose from all with different atmospheres. Gabicce Mare, Senigallia and Pesaro are livelier, whilst Monte Conero further south is quieter and has rocky coves and limestone cliffs. Nearer to the apartment are numerous beaches to choose from.
IN WINTER (OCT TO DEC) THE TRUFFLE SEASON ATTRACTS MANY TOURISTS TO THE AREA. Le Marche region is famous for its prized white truffles. Tuber magnatum Pico - to give it its botanical name - is one of the area's most sought-after treasures, and if you're here between 1 October and 31 December you won't have to pawn the family silver to try freshly-dug tartufi bianchi pregiati.

The centre for the truffle trade is Acqualagna in Pesaro-Urbino province. The town claims to be the only place in Italy where you'll find one type or another of fresh truffle throughout the year, and handles around two-thirds of the entire Italian wholesale truffle business - some 50-60 metric tons per year of all varieties of truffle.

TEMPERATE WEATHER
The Marche has a mild climate that appeals to the majority of visitors who enjoy the sunny skies and bearable temperatures, especially in spring and early autumn. The busiest month is August when the Italians flock to the coast and beaches. There are a number of enjoyable outdoor festivals and concerts organised during the peak periods, ensuring that tourists are treated to a wealth of local culture, sights and sounds.

DAY TRIPS
Italy's transport links are well developed and it is possible to drive to Rome from Fano in approx 3 hours. Venice and Verona are accessible for a day trip.

Fano / Metaurilia area

EATING OUT OR IN YOU WILL FIND FANTASTIC FRESH LOCAL FOOD
The local area boasts a number of excellent restaurants, the nearest being 2 minutes walk away! There are many restaurants within a five minute drive that won't disappoint you, and the area is well-known for fish. Being only a 10 minute drive along the SS14 from Fano the nearest town, and 20 minutes from Pesaro, the apartment has easy access to numerous excellent restaurants, shops and historic centres. There are also numerous local beach areas and eating places to choose from. The area is not built-up and you are right on the edge of the countryside. The area is very popular with cyclists and walkers.

For culture lovers the area abounds with places to see. Urbino, Gradara Castle (Gradara also has a war cemetery) are on the doorstep. The Sibillini Mountains and nature reserves are accessible by car. Opera lovers can visit the Rossini Festival in Pesaro in August and take a look around his home, only 20 minutes drive along the coast. Inland there are numerous hill towns and villages to explore.

Fano was an important port and crossroads in Roman times and the attractive old centre retains its character with many fine buildings. The Harbour (il Porto) attracts both locals and holiday-makers to its many restaurants.
TRUFFLE FAIRS FROM OCTOBER TO DECEMBER are a highlight of the region in the Autumn.

Our week in your Italian flat was pretty near perfect - Feb 2008 - D Foulser

'Thank you for the use of your lovely apartment' - July 2007 - L Perez

Just to let you know we had a wonderful time. The apartment is lovely. We found ourselves spending the days on Torette beach with the other holiday makers with their brightly coloured sun umbrellas and we ventured in Fano and Pesaro in the evening to eat and luckily there was a festival on Sunday night in Fano with parades, fire eating, etc. The food was delicious and the ice cream was awesome. I didn't hear another English voice till I got to the airport yesterday! - August 2007- L Allen

Thank you for your wonderful apartment. We truly enjoyed our stay! The children loved the beach.
Sept 2007 T Bley
