The Famagusta District
The Famagusta region of Northern Cyprus encompasses the historic walled city of Famagusta and is also the gateway to the beautiful Karpaz area, the Panhandle bit of Cyprus that juts into the Mediterranean. Less commercialised than Southern Cyprus or even the Kyrenia area of the North there are still countless oportunities to enjoy nightlife and intimate meals in the many restaurants of the region. Whether you wish to go shopping in Famagusta itself or visit the beauty and historic areas of the Karpaz you are ideally situated to have the holiday of your choosing.
The climate is warm, as Cyprus is at the Middle Eastern end of the Mediterranean but the summer heat is made enjoyable by the breezes off the Mediterranean that both cool and moisturise.
Famagusta District is on the dividing line between the areas of the island controlled by the Turkish speaking inhabitants and the Greek speaking inhabitants. There is now free passage between the two communities for members of EC countries allowing visitors the convenience of a dirct flight into Larnaca Airport.
This area of Cyprus has been occupied by many civilisations throughout history from pre Roman times up to the British. Each culture has left its mark and the latter being the widespread understanding of English by many of the friendly locals. Ther are many historical buildings and sites to visit or you can relax on some of the best unspoilt beaches in the Med.
Famagusta Town / Salamis Bay area
Famagusta Town is an ancient walled city and port. It has many points of historic interest including the walls themselves, Othello's Tower, the setting for Shakespeare's classic and ancient churches and mosques. There are modern and ancient shops where you can buy anything you may need. There are also banks with cashpoints so you can draw local currency or sterling. There are also Casinos for those who fancy a flutter.
In between the Resort and the town is the ancient city of Salamis, which whilst now ruined is a fascinating glimpse at the earliest city in Cyprus. There is an ancient amphitheatre in which concerts of traditinal and modern music are regularly held in the most awe inspiring setting imaginable.
Just a short distance up the coast towards the Karpaz is the fishng harbour of Bogaz (pronounced Bo-az) where there are many waterside restaurants and bars and fishing excursions can be arranged.
