The Falmouth area
Falmouth has one of the finest natural harbours in the world and beholds a vibrant maritime history.
For families on holiday there is plenty to do in and around Falmouth for example the Falmouth National Maritime Museum provides interest to the staunchest of landlubbers. Pendennis Castle, a mile from Falmouth town centre, protects the entrance to Falmouth Estuary and offers history and great views of Falmouth. For really keen castle lovers St Mawes castle, over the estuary, is the best preserved of Henry VIII’s coastal fortresses.
Falmouth has a bustling town centre with a great selection of craft shops, fresh seafood sellers, harbourside pubs, cafes and restaurants. The Falmouth Art Gallery is one of the best in Cornwall and regularly displays exhibitions from artists from around the country.
There are three great sandy beaches to choose from, most of them award winning:
Gyllyngvase Beach -
Situated in the heart of Falmouth and overlooked by Pendennis Castle, it is a crescent shaped white stretch of sand, ideal for safe bathing, rock-pooling and waterports.
Castle Beach -
Again overlooked by Pendennis Castle it offers safe bathing and rock-pooling.
Swanpool -
A smaller sheltered beach offering safe bathing.
All these beaches have easy access, parking, beachside shops and toilets with G having life guards during the summer months.
Out and about in Falmouth
Being a thriving port a holiday in Falmouth means you need not use you car to get around as there are many pleasure boats waiting to take you on a journey along the River Fal. Visit the County's capital, Truro, a city of heritage and culture, and enjoy some fine cuisine or take in a show at the Royal Hall for Cornwall; and St Mawes on the Roseland Peninsula, one of the prettiest harbourside villages in Cornwall.
Falmouth is on the South West Coast Path so if you fancy a walking holiday then Falmouth is well placed. The walk south will take you towards The Lizard while the walk north requires taking the ferry to St Mawes and the Roseland. The views really need to be seen to be appreciated and will be just reward.
