The West Country / Cornwall region
Falmouth’s location makes it an ideal base to explore the beauty of Cornwall. The nearby Trebah Gardens (http://www.trebahgarden.co.uk) are simply stunning with a variety of rare and exotic plants. It even has it’s own secluded beach on the Helford River! Further south, you can head to the Lizard Peninsula home to the most southerly point in Britan passing beautiful villages and beaches including the peaceful Mullion Cove.
Further along the south coast, explore the fishing village of Porthleven and then towards Penzance passing St Michael’s Mount (reached via a causeway) and the stunning Minack Theatre (http://www.minack.com) with it’s elevated position looking down on Porthcurno beach. The famous landmark Land’s End and the nearby Sennen Cove are a must for any visitor to Cornwall and the busy town of St Ives is just up the west coast with the superb beach at Carbis Bay nearby. Further north takes you to the surfers paradise of the busy Newquay and then on to the villages of Padstow and Port Isaac.
On the east coast, the Eden Project (http://www.edenproject.com) near St Austell is well worth a visit as are the small villages of Mevagissey and Fowey. Inland, the city of Truro which has numerous shops is just twenty minutes away by car or alternatively, take the train and return to Falmouth down the River Fal by ferry. Whatever you enjoy - there’s something for everyone within easy reach!
Falmouth / Maen Valley area
The town of Falmouth is home to Cornwall’s maritime heritage and is famous for its three main sandy beaches of Gyllyngvase, Swanpool and Maenporth which all have ample parking and good catering facilities.
The Ships & Castles Leisure Centre on Pendennis Headland has a wave machine and a rapid river run as well as fitness facilities should you feel the need for exercise whilst on holiday!
There are plenty of opportunities to get out on the water whether it’s a boat trip around the harbour or across the bay to St Mawes or, for the more adventurous, sailing around the Fal Estuary and Carrick Roads.
In town you can visit the acclaimed National Maritime Museum (http://www.nmmc.co.uk) and discover Falmouth’s nautical history with many hands-on experiences to enjoy. There’s Pendennis Castle, which was built by Henry VIII as a defence against the French, with superb views over to St Mawes and the Lizard Peninsula.
In the heart of town, you can wander through the bustling streets of Falmouth which offers a wide variety of shops (both national outlets and individually owned), cafes, bars, restaurants and traditional pubs overlooking the harbour. There are plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy a cream tea or, of course, a famous Cornish pasty!
