Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
About a mile from Mawnan Smith, along a pretty tree-lined no through lane in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a detached lodge to a splendid country house with fantastic uninterrupted sea views. It is surrounded by 6½ acres of level gardens and grounds with large wildlife pond (5' deep) and formal fountain pool (both unfenced). You have your own sunny patio (furniture) and lawn, and you are welcome to enjoy some of the grounds (abundant wildlife), from the 'secret garden' sheltered by tall hedges, to the field leading to the coastal footpath (unspoilt Prisk Cove, ⅓ mile) and picnic table with fabulous views over Falmouth Bay.
From the lane, a sweeping drive leads up to the lodge; door to hall and living/dining room with long, lovely garden and sea views, woodburner, TV/DVD and French windows to garden; excellent oak fitted kitchen (dishwasher, washer-drier, fridge-freezer, microwave); two bedrooms – a double (5' four-poster bed) with sea view next to a smart bathroom (suite), and a twin (footboards) with en suite shower-room (suite). External door at back to coat/boot drying room. No children under 10. A great chill-out place for peace and quiet at any time of year.

The West Country region
Cornwall's 'Med': here is Cornwall at its warmest, most sheltered; of creeks and tidal waters penetrating deep inland, deep in woods, silent except for birdsong; of wonderful gardens growing things that live nowhere else outdoors in England (marvellous in rhododendron, camellia, magnolia time, from March to end of May especially); of sailing boats everywhere decorating the sea; of harbour villages where the light is Mediterranean - dazzling in the sunshine. And really very little that is ugly has been allowed to be built.
Here is Truro, Cornwall's (small) capital, with its 20th century cathedral; Falmouth, resort town and cargo/cruise ship/yacht port, superbly sited; and the glorious Helford River. Trewithen, Trelissick, Glendurgan, Trebah, Heligan (Lost Gardens of) and Caerhays are among the finest gardens. In the very middle of Cornwall, Lanhydrock house is very special, so is its garden. Not the greatest area for beaches, but good sandy ones near Veryan and Portscatho, in St Mawes, and around Falmouth and the Helford River's mouth. Not to be missed is St Just-in-Roseland's churchyard; nor - within easy reach - is The Eden Project (see South Cornwall).
Mawnan Smith: village (good food pub, useful shops/PO) a mile from the sea at the mouth of the beautiful Helford River. Falmouth, 3½ miles. Wonderful walks; beautiful Trebah and Glendurgan Gardens, about 1 mile.
