Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
a mile from Port Navas is Calamansack, a hamlet of cottages down a private lane beside the broad Helford River, looking over it and Frenchman's Creek to wooded hillsides and fields, almost buildingless; an infinitely peaceful scene, excellent for birdwatchers. Lots of birds (swans, curlews, buzzards, herons and egrets), animals (foxes, badgers). Constantine, 3½ miles. We let three cottages here.
... close to the river, a very pretty, detached cottage with stunning views over the river. Sun terrace (table/chairs, barbecue) with steps to an acre of garden sloping down to the water's edge with own slipway to the side and almost 100' of river frontage. Doors to fitted kitchen with slate floor, granite worktops, farmhouse sink, dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer, table/chairs; downstairs hall/utility area (washing machine, tumble drier) with side door, and bathroom (suite plus hand-shower and separate shower). The kitchen leads to good-sized living/dining room with dining table, glazed stable doors to terrace, granite inglenook fireplace (woodburner), TV/DVD/video, superb views of the river from each window. Stairs up to three bedrooms – a step up to the master double (5' brass bed) with en suite bathroom (suite plus bath-shower and hand-shower), a small twin (2'6" beds suitable for children under 13, zip-linkable to 5' double), and another double, all overlooking the river. The West Country region
Cornwall's 'Med': here is Cornwall at its warmest, most sheltered; of creeks and tidal waters penetrating deep inland, deep in woods, silent except for birdsong; of wonderful gardens growing things that live nowhere else outdoors in England (marvellous in rhododendron, camellia, magnolia time, from March to end of May especially); of sailing boats everywhere decorating the sea; of harbour villages where the light is Mediterranean - dazzling in the sunshine. And really very little that is ugly has been allowed to be built.
Here is Truro, Cornwall's (small) capital, with its 20th century cathedral; Falmouth, resort town and cargo/cruise ship/yacht port, superbly sited; and the glorious Helford River. Trewithen, Trelissick, Glendurgan, Trebah, Heligan (Lost Gardens of) and Caerhays are among the finest gardens. In the very middle of Cornwall, Lanhydrock house is very special, so is its garden. Not the greatest area for beaches, but good sandy ones near Veryan and Portscatho, in St Mawes, and around Falmouth and the Helford River's mouth. Not to be missed is St Just-in-Roseland's churchyard; nor - within easy reach - is The Eden Project (see South Cornwall).
Port Navas: beautiful creek-side hamlet, completely unspoilt. Oyster farm. The tidal creek leads into the Helford River, and beside it a lane to Glendurgan and Trebah gardens and Helford Passage (sandy beach, good pub, boat hire) where pedestrian ferry to Helford village (nice pub). Many other beaches nearby. Constantine (nearest shops/good food pubs), 1½ miles; Falmouth, 6.
