Home description

Chy Fentongoth means 'Cottage of the Old Well' - the cottage is an interesting two storey outbuilding of a 17th century farmhouse around which the village has grown, set behind Fore Street. Chy Fentongoth is joined to the main house by our single storey kitchen, and the courtyard is common to both. The well is located in the courtyard and originally served the cottages in the immediate vicinity - it is now safely covered.

The West Country / Cornwall region

The West Country has some of the most spectacular beaches in the whole of the UK and has long been a popular destination. If you are of a more active disposition Cornwall offers some of the best surfing beaches in the whole of the UK as well as excellent facilities for both water sports and rock climbing. If however you prefer the slower pace of life then Cornwall has a wealth of excellent rural walks and award winning beaches to relax on.

Falmouth / Constantine area

Constantine is one of the largest parishes in Cornwall. It stretches from the granite ridge of Carmenellis in the north to the banks of the Helford River in the south and also won the Calor Cornish Village of The Year in 2006.

Employment over the centuries has centred on the river, farming and granite quarries. Now, with very little quarrying done, and no schooners or barques using the river, tourism is very important with lots of vessels enjoying the river with it's beautiful creeks and small beaches. Walkers, garden lovers and golfers all recharge their batteries in this lovely area.

The Parish consists of Constantine village and the hamlets of Port Navas (home of the Duchy Oyster Fishery) Brill and Seworgan. Constantine's Fore Street is made up of traditional granite cottages, with a 13th Century Parish Church, and 19th Century Methodist Chapel which is now our wonderful Tolmen Centre (a Performing Arts Venue with a well patronised cafe and home to our Parish Heritage Collection). There is a Silver Band, four Choirs as well as Garden, Art and Agricultural Societies. An annual Regetta at Port Navas and village Carnival are enjoyed by visitors and residents together.

For a taste of what goes on, visit the parish web site (www.constantinecornwall.com) or pick up a copy of the monthly "Gweder Myras" village newspaper. Available in your accommodation is a copy of "Five walks around Constantine" to encourage you to stretch your legs and get an insight into the history, flora and fauna of this lovely part of Cornwall.

Within the village there is a butcher, a hairdresser, a homeopath, a Spar grocers (8am to 9pm) and a Post Office & General Store with very large off-licence (including 500 different whiskies !). There is also a small Craft/Gift Shop offering local Information and Internet access.

There are also Doctor's and Dentist's surgeries; a village pub (The Queen's Arms) and a Social Club. Just outside the village, a fifteen minute footpath stroll away, is the Trengilly Wartha Inn, which is an award-winning "Pub of the Year", with real ales; an excellent restaurant and bar food.

The village is served with regular bus services to Helston and Falmouth (both about 7 miles away) and Truro (14 miles). We also have a village Taxi Service.

From Constantine you can easily reach the more popular tourist points; including many Gardens and, of course, The Eden Project. Alternatively, visit St. Micheals Mount, enjoy a boat ride up the River Fal to Truro or walk to the most southerly point of England at the Lizard ! Or just find a beach that the locals use, and relax away from it all.

How to get there

By Car from London take the following motorways: M4, M5 then trunk route A30 and then the A39. Directions happily e-mailed or faxed.
