Step inside, and you'll arrive immediately in the living room, a beautifully-lit space that invites you to nestle into its luxurious leather seats. Why not put your feet up and play a DVD, or flick through the Freeview channels on the ample flatscreen television? The Wi-fi connection lets you fire up a laptop or portable device. Should you prefer your living space a little more traditional, you can warm yourself before the wood burning stove, housed within a gorgeous fireplace.

From there, the room stretches away into the spacious kitchen and dining area. Flooded with natural light, this is an immaculate space for discussing the day's delights, and the magnificent range-style cooker lets you prepare a delicious feast using the abundance of fresh seafood available in the village. Those looking for an easier evening can dine out at the superb Waterside restaurant, and the Seven Stars and Royal Standard pubs offer more liquid refreshment.

The kitchen has plenty of other excellent facilities, including a washing machine, large fridge freezer, and dishwasher, and you can even gain access to a ground floor shower room. The relaxed accommodation gives you not just a handy breakfast bar, but a large and separate dining area, with a table that can comfortably seat six at a time.

Fresh air is important, and none of it comes fresher than the exquisite blue that drifts over Cornwall. Compared to much of the UK, the weather here tends to be quite spectacular. Luckily, there is a gorgeous little paved courtyard (accessed from the kitchen) so that you can sit and gulp in as much of the environment as possible. The tabled area is complemented by a barbecue set, so whether you want to have a few drinks, or get the sausages sizzling, you can indulge your whims - all in total privacy.

Stairs lead up to a lovely second floor, comprising two wonderful family-friendly bedrooms. Tucked away to the rear is the secluded master bedroom, a space that feels private yet personal at the same time. Antique furniture ratchets up the appeal, while the wrought iron bed guarantees only the deepest and most satisfying of slumbers. The pristine en-suite bathroom makes exceptional use of the space, finding room for a WC, sink, and a large bath, all the while mirroring the unrushed but luxurious feel of the bedroom.

The second bedroom is a glorious space for the younger family members. It can sleep up to three, with the double bed and bunk providing flexible accommodation that adapts to your needs. An extensive wardrobe provides plenty of storage space, while the windows offer a range of views over the delicious cottage-strewn streets of Flushing.

Few of the locals will be surprised that so much of Cornwall has Area of Natural Beauty status, and Bookend's idyllic setting gives you a magical canvas from which to weave a spell-binding holiday. The local village of Flushing was itself a huge draw for Dutch sailors - who left their mark in the form of the countless exquisite Queen Anne houses. The renowned restaurant and pubs sit alongside such local pleasures as the Kiln Quay Beach and Bowling Green - complete with pirate-themed play area. Only slightly further afield lies Mylor, with its wet and wild water sports area, and energetic coastal walks. In a different vein is the delightful village of Penryn, which drips history from every house and tree.

Take a short ferry ride across the water, and you get to Falmouth, with its enviable selection of eateries and other amusements - including the pair of formidable Henrician castles, Pendennis and St Mawes. From there, it's simple to stretch out to the natural charm of Trelissick, and the cathedral city of Truro and beyond. Cornwall crams so much wonder and beauty into every inch of its landscape that you may ponder how you ever lived without its memories captivating your mind.
