The Donegal region

If you long to get away from it all, then Donegal is the perfect spot. With soaring sea cliffs that plummet 300 metres, deserted white sandy beaches, jaw-dropping landscapes, excellent seafood and quiet cosy pubs, Donegal forces you to sit back, slow down and admire the view.

But whether you want to opt for long rambling walks over rugged terrain, laze around on a scenic beach, or explore an ancient site, this spectacular county in Ireland’s North West corner is hard to beat.
Ards Forest Park, County Donegal

This 1,200-acre park is the perfect spot for a family outing. Situated on the shores of Sheephaven Bay on the rugged Donegal coastline, it’s filled with woodland, rivers, picnic areas, sandy beaches, and play areas.
Earagail Arts Festival, County Donegal

Generally taking place in July, the Earagail Arts Festival includes theatre and comedy, outdoor family events, children’s events, exhibitions, film and workshops. Over 80 events take place at over 35 locations in County Donegal. Check the website for current dates and programme.
Glenveagh National Park, County Donegal

This stunning park encompasses 14,000 hectares of mountain, raised bogland, lakes and woodlands dissected by the valley that gives the park its name. The Golden Eagle was reintroduced to the park in 2000 after 100 years of extinction. There’s also a castle and magnificent gardens on site.
Sea Cliffs

With the highest sea cliffs in Europe, fantastic mountains and sweeping landscapes, amazing coastal walks are a speciality whether you want to go it alone, or make a trip with an organised walking tour.

Falcarragh / Killult area

Toraigh is a remote and craggy island lying eight miles off Cnoc Fola (Bloody Foreland) on the north Donegal coast. It supports a population of almost 200 people.

The islanders live in two clustered settlements – An Baile Thiar (west town) and An Baile Thoir (east town). Toraigh’s spectacular cliff scenery is complemented by a rich and varied history. The island was first occupied more than 4,500 years ago, as a Neolithic dolmen revealed. The Iron Age promontory fort of Dún Bhaloir is said to have been the stronghold of Balor na Súile Nimhe (Balor of the Evil Eye), a mythical warlord prominent in the island’s folk memory.

Ionad Cois Locha or the Dunlewey Lakeside Centre is situated on the shores of Dunlewey Lough in the shadow of the haunting and mysterious Poison Glen and at the foot of Mount Errigal, the highest mountain in the county.

The centre tells the story of the renowned weaver, Manus Ferry, and his home has been reconstructed to give the visitor the full flavour of life in Donegal in the middle of the last century. It offers something for all the family and facilities include weaving displays, a lake with paddle boats and canoes, an indoor play area, lakeside walks and pony trekking.

Guestbook for Laurel Cottage

The cottage is beautiful – the owners have thought of everything. It is in a location that is within close proximity to so many attractions. We mainly spent our time at the many different beaches in the surrounding area. And of course there is the wild & beautiful Glenveigh National Park. I will most definitely be returning to this beautiful cottage...Aoife Dublin May 2009

I must say this was a brilliant holiday in a great part of the world, and made all the better by staying in such a wonderful cottage. It had just the right mix of modern and traditional and is set in such a beautiful location...Vavavoom Belfast April 2009

House was really comfortable and had every facility we needed. Especially enjoyed the turf fire, and although we didn't need it for the heat still lit it most nights for the atmosphere. Well equipped kitchen plenty of towels etc. Even games and books, a real home from home...Jim Ayrshire July 2009

So very sad to leave. Thank you for allowing us to live in your wonderful cottage. It was a migical home -even for a wee while. All 23 of our family members loved it !! M Scotland April 2009

Before we unlocked the door I was warned "look, it might not be like what it looked like on the website", but it was! We weren't too lucky with the weather but still climbed Errigal, caught fish off the rocks (and had them for tea) walked for hours every day on magnificent beaches and every night saw another amazing sunset. We also sat on our backsides in front of the turf fire or round the table in the beautiful has-everything kitchen and slept in cosy beds listening to the rain and wind outside. We had a most relaxing holiday in a handsomely designed and equipped cottage and I am looking forward to getting back as soon as possible. E England Sept 2009
