The Burgundy / Cote-d'Or region
The village of Fain-les Moutiers is situated about 300km southeast of Paris. It is about an hour by car from either Dijon or Beaune (by autoroute) and about a half-hour from Chablis cross-country.
It is convenient to 3 interesting towns, each about 15 minutes drive from Fain. Semur-en Auxois is a fortified medieval gem with good shopping and restaurants. Montbard is located in the Burgundy Canal valley and has many interesting sites nearby (notably the Abbey at Fontenay, Flavigny-sur Ozerain and Alesia, as well as many of Burgundy’s best chateaux).
The TGV stops 8 times a day at the Montbard station, with Paris 1h05 away, and London (via Lille and the Eurostar) or EuroDisney is an easy morning trip. Avallon is about 20 minutes away, but boasts a wonderful market and many excellent shops and restaurants. Access to the Morvan regional park is easiest via Avallon.

MARKETS: • Sunday morning, there is a small street market in Semur en Auxois. There are food shops open there as well. There is also a larger market in Chablis, but that is a longer drive. Also, the supermarket in Montbard is open in the morning. Otherwise, the best markets are: • Avallon is 20 minutes away. The market is Saturday morning, though this is a good town to shop in general. • Montbard is 20 minutes away. The market is Friday morning. • Auxerre is an hour away. The markets are Friday and Saturday mornings. • Dijon is an hour away. Market Tuesday and Saturday morning
SWIMMING: • Lac du Pont near Semur. • The weir on the River Armancon just outside of Viserny. • Outdoor community pool at Epoisses.
TOURISM: The area in general is very rich in history and culture. Places of interest close by: • Chateau at Epoisses • Semur en Auxois • Avallon • Dijon • Beaune and the Wine Region • Auxerre and the Chablis Wine Region • In the Montbard direction, the Burgundy Canal valley has many sites: Alesia; Flavigny; the Abbey of Fontenay; Chateaux at Ancy le Franc and Tanlay. • In the Avallon direction is Vezelay and the Morvan Regional Park.
For the kids: • Parc de l’Auxois between Veneray and Vitteaux (a large petting zoo with a huge play area. • Ferme du Hameau near Bierre les Semur autoroute exit (a well done model farm, lots to see. Pony rides.)
