Picturesque village home
About the home
We have preserved the character of a Corbières village home while providing modern comforts, including en suite shower rooms with WCs for all bedrooms. Our compact but spacious house boasts beautiful ceiling beams, original doors and a traditional fireplace.
Attention has been paid to comfort and convenience in all areas of the house including adequate storage and wardrobe space. Our modern kitchen with traditional tiling is well-equipped for cooking and the dining table seats 8 comfortably. On the first floor there is a light, open plan sitting room and a cosy, separate room with TV and DVD player.
The house stands on the former site of the medieval keep, facing onto a small tree-lined square with views of the Faisan tower, last vestige of the medieval citadel. There is no through-traffic (the access street is only wide enough for one car) and in the evening we often take out our chairs and sip an aperitif in the shade of the trees. Later, as the sun starts to set, swifts wheel around above the square - an exercise they perform without fail every summer evening!

A spiral interior staircase leads to an airy open plan sitting room with large window overlooking the square. Also on the first floor is a smaller sitting/bedroom with sofa bed, chairs and its own en suite bathroom. This contains the TV with DVD player.
On the second floor is another bedroom with double bed, a larger room containing 2 single beds and a mezzanine (gallery) with 2 further single beds. All bedrooms face on to the square. Full size travel cot available.
The bedrooms and shower rooms are all self-contained, leading directly off the landings. Our aim has been to provide flexible sleeping facilities so that six people could use only the top floor, or, for more privacy, someone may prefer to use the sofa bed in the TV room.

It is not unusual to find people in the village sitting outside their houses eating dinner in the summer evenings.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

Fabrezan is located in the midst of the Corbières vineyards, famous for their robust red wines. It is easily accessible, being only 40 minutes from Carcassonne airport and 5 minutes from the A61 autoroute. It is equidistant from the historic cities of Narbonne and Carcassonne which may both be reached in less than half an hour.
The Mediterranean coast is also only 30 minutes away and there are resorts and amenities for all tastes.
Cathar castles, medieval abbeys and picturesque villages are all near at hand. Villages and towns in the region offer an array of summer activities and events from jazz concerts to bricabrac markets. In the autumn enjoy watching the vineyards turn to gold and rambling over the garrigues.
The spectacular Mediterranean countryside with its rocky outcrops and aromatic herbs offers wonderful opportunities for walking or cycling.
If you want to go further afield, it is not far to the Pyrenees and the Spanish border which can be reached in an hour and a half.
The Fabrezan area
Amenities in Fabrezan include a bakery, 2 grocery stores, 3 café/bars with food available, a tabac, a post office, a pharmacy, a pizzeria and two excellent restaurants. There are 2 large well-stocked supermarkets at 7 minutes’ drive.
However, Wednesday would not be complete without a visit to the weekly market at Lézignan-Corbieres, just 10 minutes away. This attractive market town buzzes in the summer and can provide all your needs for shopping, eating out and entertainment.
Recreational facilities in Fabrezan include a local sports centre with badminton, tennis courts and a pétanque area, a children's playground and a football pitch. You can picnic and potter down by the river or wander out through the vineyards to nearby hiking paths and picnic spots.
The Orbieu river, which curves around Fabrezan, is popular with fishermen, while upstream in the neighbouring village of Ribaute, only ten minutes away, it is ideal for swimming, paddling or just sunbathing on the rocks.
If you are there for 14th July enjoy the communal al fresco meal complete with live band followed by the candlelit procession and fireworks over the river.

Charming and deceptively spacious village house. The location is excellent - a real and friendly french village with plenty to interest everyone. The house is tucked away on a small square in the middle of the village. It is a very short walk to the shops, bars, restuarants, and boulangerie. The village is big enough to feel lived in, but small enough to walk round in half an hour. Larger supermarkets are a 10 minute drive away in Lezignan - excellent market on Wednesdays. Fabrezan is a good base to explore the wider area - the coast is not too far away - and very is near to good river swimming spots (Ribaut to name one) The house is a well kept property - plenty of space and well supplied with extras. 3 toilet / shower rooms makes life with teenagers bearable ! Highly recommended and very good value. |

This is a wonderful place to stay if you want to be in walking distance of bars, shops and the boulangerie. The house was ideal for us and our two teenagers, with a choice of four rooms in which to sleep, good sized kitchen, three bathrooms, washing machine and television with BBC news. There are lovely views over the square and you can sit in the living room, by the balcony window with the sun streaming in or you can sit in the square, as we did (about 15 of us) and have lunch. The locals were all friendly and always said hello. There are a couple of places nearby to swim in rivers which were very popular with our children. |
Guestbook for Picturesque village home
'The kids had a great time and we didn't even notice not having a garden. There is so much for the family to see and do around the village itself and the surrounding region.'
"We came all the way from Oz and it was well worth it. The house felt so lived in and comfortable. Exploring the region with its castles, picturesque villages and wonderful walks kept us busy for two weeks. Really appreciated the books and brochures on the region, especially the walking guides.'
"The house was great, everything that you might need. It was a great location, centre of the village and we used the shops, cafes, bars daily. We both loved the region. The picnic gear came in very useful."
'The house is extremely well-equipped, ideally situated and very comfortable - and unbelievably good value'
'A lovely week re-visiting our favourite places from last year. Our friends enjoyed the river as much as we did.'
