The Scottish Borders region
Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike.
Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages. Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster.
Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Eyemouth / Burnmouth area
At the foot of the incredible Berwickshire coast cliffs, the little fishing hamlet of Lower Burnmouth thrives in this idyllic location. The quaint fisherman's cottages enjoy uninterrupted sea views along a beautiful, rugged shoreline. During the summer months, grey seals can be spotted in the sheltered bay and for wildlife lovers, trips to the Farne Islands can be easily arranged by boat from nearby. The village itself is served by local amenities at Upper Burnmouth and Eyemouth, one and four miles away respectively. The vibrant town of Berwick-upon-Tweed is also close and can be reached quickly by car. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, wonderful sandy beaches and the Scottish borders are all within easy driving distance and with the Scottish capital of Edinburgh only forty minutes away by rail, this is a brilliant location for festival goers.

Guestbook for 1478 - Braefoot
We loved the views, the cosiness of the cottage and the light and airy decor.

,The views are fantastic from the cottage and the cottage garden; we sat in the garden watching seals on the rocks. There were Hermit Crabs, Shrimps and young sea fish in the rock pools. It was very peaceful but within a short drive there were plenty of things to do. The hosts gave us a lovely welcome as they knew we would arrive late, providing tea, coffee, milk, biscuits and wine! A beautiful place; very relaxing.

,I especially liked the location. We arrived in the dark so the spectacular views didn't hit us until the morning!
I liked milk in the fridge, basic supplies of coffee etc in the kitchen and the fact that I didn't have to bring any towels!

,A very cosy and comfortable 'home from home' property, set in a very peaceful locaiton by the sea. An ideal location for touring the Scottish Borders. Very nice to find tea, coffee, milk and biscuits awaiting us. Great to have a coal fire.
